I'm looking at buying a Hilux which has a 253 in it. Wat's the go regarding legalities with it? When ya put a 253 into one do ya need to get it engineered or anything? I'm in SA to.

Cheers.

Just rang a guy from Regency Park and he said I'd need to submit an "Application to modify a motor vehicle" form with all the details on it. Then they send out paperwork which includes everything which needs to be done, then it has to be inspected.

Has anyone done this b4? What needs to be changed to make it pass?

Ask The Department of main roads or whatever in your state (visit their website, should have a rundown on EXACTLY what you need to do).

No advice here will save you if you are pulled over for a check.

Gary, for the record, "Regency Park" is "head office" for Transport SA, and is where Adelaide based people take vehicles for inspections.

And, for the record, Transport SA sucks!

Nobody there will talk to you about your modifications. It all needs to be done in writing. You could try to fight them, but I expect you'll need to jump their hoops as they direct.

Then, once they send a form to tell you what you need to do, there's no guarantee it's correct. You'll need an authorised engineer to review what they've asked for, and perform the tests.

I'm not sure how they calculate these things now, but once upon a time engine conversions primarily considered the power to weight ratio of the finished vehicle. I think a (stock ;) ) 253 in a Hilux will be acceptable in this respect, but they'll almost certainly want a brake test performed.

Once you have your list of requirements, and the vehicle has passed the tests, then Transport SA will want to inspect it again. If you're in the country, you may not need to take it to Regency Park for this.

Thx Scott. I wonder how many people who do the conversion actually go through all that and get it legalised?? I think I might just go with the majority (well wat I assume would be the majority lol) and just drive it. It's not gonna be a daily, just a toy. Hopefully have a suss at it on Sunday....it might even be legal already, not sure.

from what i understand a 253 in a hilux is just an emission test(idle emisions test so no modified cams allowed) and roadworthy in sa and the evaporotive emisions connected (polution gear) so standard carby so if you use a blue 253 a rochester is fine on an old lux pree 89 and post 89 lpg or injected for emissions

As allready said....... emmissions will be the biggest hurdle....... actually mountain to climb

You'll most likely need to convert it to sole LPG fuel aswell ( to get to the emmissions levels required)
( this means removal of ALL fuel componets except the actual carby.... yep, even all the chassis fuel lines will have to be taken off)

its a nightmare issue and a rough road to travel.

you'd be far better off fitting another engine from a newer vehicle ..... less headaces, easier, and probably more power than the old 253 !!!

A V6 would have far less issues than a 253
