I would suggest that its leaking from the top cover O'ring and running down. If your very mechanically minded you can do it yourself .

17mm socket 8-10' extension and 1/2 ratchet will get you out of trouble and you can then take the 2 copper washers into an auto store like super cheap or autobarn or even injector place and match them up for new ones then check the banjo fitting and the sealing surfaces for and pittin or scrathes or burrs etc that will stop it from sealing then get very fine file and file it smooth again then replace new washers tighten down and see how it goes

Z2, look very clean & we around the side of the top plate.

Give it a clean with carby cleaner to remove all the diesel & dry with compressed air. Start engine & watch for where the diesel appears from. Fair bet its from the top plate. If you are unsure, repeat the steps but with the engine running (be careful of the spinning bits at the front.....)

Its unusual for the copper washers in the fuel inlet to start leaking on their own. They usually only leak after they have been disturbed.

it's only leaking when the engine's running from both the banjo fitting and also the other point on the left. i'll be replacing the copper washers from the banjo fitting because they are deteriorating. but what's the other point on the left and what type of tool do you use to undo it? it's as though the only tool that will fit is an open ended spanner but there's no room to get anything other than a ratchet and extension in there...? and what's likely to need replacing at the point on the left?

Theres a special socket required to get the other unit out. It has 2 orings on it, but as suggested it may well be your top cover leaking.

ok, so had another look tonight after replacing the copper washers for the banjo fitting and looks like it's actually coming from the join as indicated in the pic below. presume this is the top plate and therefore probably o-ring? whilst i don't have a lot of mechanical experience, once someone shows or explains things to me i pick it up quick and can generally figure things out for myself. how hard is this to fix? any instructions?
cheers

The leak can be fixed on the car, you are basically fixing the weakest link in the chain. Unless you have done it before or have exact instructions, I would leave it alone, there are settings that will get disturbed, if they are not back in the correct position, it is then a guess where to put them.
