Brakes

HI all.

I have had enough of having such sh!itty brakes on my poop carrier and I'm going to spend my tax return on making this thing handle / stop a bit nicer before something goes horribly wrong. For a long time I just got used to it, it never failed rego for braking issues and when other people drove it and complained I put it down to it being such a heavy vehicle and they were'nt used to it taking longer to slow down. But lately it's been pretty shocking.

So I've been looking into a transfer case/tailshaft handbrake. I've heard these are supposed to be far more reliable than my current drum brake set-up at the moment. Also a disc brake conversion. The old girl was born in 1990 and unfortunately missed the luxury of disc brakes which I hear the later models had. What is involved in this and was it worth it? Where were the parts sourced? Just from wreckers or can you buy a kit?

Aside form new fluid/bleed the lines etc, Is there anything else I can do to make this thing pull up?

Spins 33" BFG AT's, Drum brakes on rear.

If you maintained your brakes sufficiently your troopy would pull up just fine. Your issue could be as simple as your rear brakes being out of adjustment. This will give you both poor braking/pedal feel and crap handbrake. Drum rear brake/park brake setups on toyotas need regular adjustment, usually every oil change is a good idea. Get a workshop manual or pay a pro to do it. Disc brake/transfer brake is definately an option but certainly not the only solution to your problem.

that transfer brake is not made by them its from Hoppers Stoppers and cost $1800.. its a total rip off ...ive looked into there design as i have seen the setup first hand and its justa a simple bracket and a disc cut from plate with a boat trailer caliper worth $80 ..ive looked at the cost to make it its around $200-250

Get the brakes in good working condition first and then decide if you need a brake upgrade. My 89' 60 series with rebuilt factory drum/disc brakes pulled up better than my 06 GU Patrol ute with 4 wheel discs does.

Okay, I will give them a good overhaul and see how we go.

Everyone I speak to just tells me it's a Toyota thing.
