thanks for the earlier responses guys.

I am looking to fit a swing away wheel/tool carrier, but kinda object to paying 1200bucks for a new one. Does anyone have any designs or links to designs/homebuilt jobbies?

If i build one, any tips on what features to include or good ideas?

$1200 is cheap, price a Kaymar one!

The pivot is the hardest thing to get right have seen one fabbed up using a trailer stub shaft and wheel flange. Welded the stub shaft to the bumper and then welded the wheel carrier to the wheel flange. Never rattled, easy to open as it had a greased bearing in the pivot and cost about $50.

Partly agree.....The latching mechanism is just as important...i've seen some neat booty fab ones that seem to mount tight, but the latch has just enough give to give that nice resonating squeak over every bump.....

The one I made for my jigger worked well until I caught it on a steep acent and bent it. I used a latch like the ones designed too hold the sides up on a flat deck.

My swing away cost about $100 to make and fit !, The dearest bit was the overcentre catch i used.... $36.00 ( they are now about $60 each )..... check out what trailer manafacturers have on hand, I got mine from a trailer manafacturer and he had a good range of overcentre catches to choose from. From light weight "briefcase" style to tray ute side catches to the monsters i got !!

The carrier carrys a 35 BFG and I can still open the rear window ( SWB MQ Patrol ) with about an inch of clearance ......

It used to squeak offroad but a dob of weld tightened it up and it hasnt given an ounce of trouble since...... unfortunately the rust has gotten in and it will need a rebuild, probably around the end of this winter

I have just finished making a rear bar and wheel carrier for my 80 series. I used 60mm steam pipe with 5mm wall for the bar so I was able to weld in a trailer spindle and from there machined up a hub to carry the bearings and welded the carrier frame to this. Also found the ideal heavy-duty cam-over adjustable latch at work which works a treat.

Made my own not only for cost reasons but for weight, clearance and practicality reasons. The wheel carrier takes a 35" centrepede and hi-lift jack with bugger all movement off-road, no squeks and the tail light is still visable and the smaller rear barn door clears the tyre.

My only costs were the bearings ($12.50) and 3 bolts with the same thread as wheel studs so I could use wheelnuts to secure tyre ($10). Being a fitter and having access to steel and a lathe has its advantages

i made mine out of some c channel and welded in trailer stubs. i had the hub machined up as i didnt want to weld to the trailer hub being cast steel. for the latch i used and over centre that i got from my steel supply. it cost under 100 all up and i got jerry can holder on the other side. only thing i have to do is to put lights in the bar as mine are now obscured
