Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey guys

Ive got a 1990 80 series with the old 1HZ. The factory alternator has given up, and so ive gone and bought a new 110amp unit which was meant to be straight replacement.

However the bottom mount on the new unit was too wide and i had to shave it to get it fit in the bottom cradle. Then i found that the distance between the top and bottom mounts is greater then that of the factory unit..... and the alternator mounts on the 1HZ are rigid, and dont allow for any adjustment up and down. This means that my new shiny alternator doesnt fit. Ive been told now that the 110amp alternators are larger then the original ones and i will have to modify the mounts on the engine! Im not keen on this, plus there doesnt look like being enough room anyway as the aircon compressor is only about 1cm above the top alternator mount in its current position :(

Has any one had any experience with this?

yep sounds like rubbish, wrong alternator or something, not a good thing to modify the braket incase you need to get a genuine alt back on.

yep, had the same problem with a replacement alternator.....

Pissed me off, but I shaved the bottom mount like you have and then took the top bracket off, two bolts by memory, and bent the bracket a little bit, hammer and a vice, to get it to fit, might have taken one or two attempts to get it right. Now it is all good.

P.S. I have since had to replace that alternator and the next one went straight in.

Ah its good to hear some else has hit this issue!!

Did that mean that you had to bend the bracket back again in order to fit the latest alternator as it as the same size as the original? or did it fit straight in because the bracket was already bent? With the bracket bent was there much room between the top of the alternator and the bottom of the air con compressor? And were both replacement units 110amp?

How did you go bending the bracket, they're cast iron aren't they?

Yeah i must admit im not too keen on messing with the factory mounts and than not being able to fit a standard alternator if this large one dies out in the bush....

Anyone else with this experience?

I had a similar issue on a customer's 1FZ alternator. Tried 3 different brand direct replacements, none of them were right. Even with the mounts shaved to fit, the adjusting arm didn't line up and even if modded it would have come close to the compressor. Ended up getting the original alternator rebuilt. Was very wierd.

Yeah very weird! Rather pathetic that so many manufactures cannot provide a product that fits........ :(

Well i reckon that i will get my money back and go down the rebuilt path as well then. I was willing to pay more for a brand new unit (was charged $655!), but now will save dollars instead and get mine reconditioned.
