Complete diff width guide - help please

Posted: Sat Dec 04, 2010 1:41 pm
by Mr DJ
Have noticed there is not a diff width guide covering most/all models, so started putting one together.
What I'm after are measurements you have checked yourself so we can all use it with confidence.
Any mistakes/omissions please point them out along with the correct number, built dates, etc. would be great. Will then add them to the list.

What I have so far from searching here and Pirate is ..

Wheel mount surface to wheel mount surface is the standard way.

Just so were all on the same page about measuring, next time you have the wheels of for something, it only takes a few minutes to do ...

Remove wheels, place a staight edge (e.g. piece of steel angle etc.) across the wheel mounting face of each side and measure accurately between the straight edges.
Don't forget to take into account any resess to the mounting face ( e.g. 60 series rear brake drums) when measuring.

Taken from JeepForum
Following is for axles out of a Jeep Wrangler (TJ) 1997-2006.
All Wrangler TJ axles have a WMS of 60.5"
Front: dana 30 (1997-2006), Dana 44 [Rubicon model (2003-2006)]
Rear: Dana 35c (1997-2006), Dana 44(1997-2006), Dana 44 [Rubicon model (2003-2006)]

Ref. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/stock ... ns-452871/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
In Australia some '97 model TJs are listed as 1996 Jeep Wrangler (TJ) as their manufacture date was in mid/late 1996.

Luke.
PS. Just read your post about checking the widths personally. I have personally checked the width of the Front Dana 30 (1997-2006) and Rear Dana 44 (1997-2006). The other widths I have not checked personally.

Jeep Cherokee (XJ) 1984-2001
I believe all Dana 30 and Dana 35 Axles from a XJ to have a WMS 60.5"
Front:
1984-1999 Dana 30 High Pinion
2000-2001 Dana 30 Low Pinion
Rear:
1984-1989 Dana 35 non c-clip
1990-2001 Dana 35 c-clip

Ref. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/cher ... ecs-26256/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Additional XJ axle information in the link, but no listed WMS.

Have started adding build dates & crown wheel sizes.
Please correct them if wrong as I'm not 100% sure on all diffs and a guess really on the build dates.

Here is a tech section from IH8MUD with a good amount of tech info an Cruisers.

Here is the "Table of Contents" page

http://www.cruiserfaq.com/00-01.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here is the specifications chart that has the track width along with other measurements

http://www.cruiserfaq.com/04-02.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Need to check some of your Cruiser info Doug, you can check in the above link.

This page also has a rediculous amount of various Tech links that you could spend months going through (not sure if you need to be a member to view ?)

I've just checked a 55 series front... I get 1430mm... this is a drum brake front.. I don't think they ever came with discs... it would be easy to make a mistake on these because the WMS is noticeably under the drum face ( I measured it at abt 12mm each side).. maybe that is why the distance shown in the original table is different to mine... I triple checked mine and am sure its correct and yes I'm sure it's a 55 front... the car is still bolted to it.. :D :D

Also checked 60 front... 1495mm.... triple checked as well...also different to that originally shown... got no idea why..

Possibly the difference between track and WMS-WMS. Track would include the wheel offset.

I think the OP is after the WMS-WMS measurement not the usually supplied wheel track.

Thanks RED60, I found the same with the 60 rear as the WMS is recessed to the brake drum each side.

Correct DAMKIA.

Brooksy, did all the early cruisers run 0 offset split rims from factory ?
If they did, can use the track widths to be very close.
Have check measured a 60 rear I have here and WMS-WMS is only 5mm different to track width.

No Australian delivered TJ came with the D35 they were all D44 so you may as well take the D35 for the TJ off the list.

Cheers

With the GU remember there is the coil wagon H260 and the leaf ute H260 not sure if they differ. Similarly the GU coil front wagon diff my be different to the coil ute GU front.

Also the wagon diffs are shaved from factory where as the utes are not. Disk, drum, semi float, full float, etc

I think Nissan just used what was in the corner somedays! Lol

I have GU diffs under my Jeep.
All I know is that they are out of a UK spec Nissan Patrol Y61 (GU). Body type is a LWB Wagon. Discs all around. Single pot calipers rear, double pot calipers front.

Will this help?
I can get measurements on monday. busy this weekend and wont be in the work unit.
Luke.
