1HDT no power/surging

Post by KIWI »

Hi all,
the 80 series is surging under load at low revs (1300), whereas a mates (both manual) has no problem pulling away (both have around 320km)
I'm finding that even in 1st gear on the slightest incline you need to ride the clutch to move off as the surging is that bad you can't pull away.
I've recently had the injectors recondition, but can't remember having a problem before that.

Fuel consumption is on the high side too, around 15-18L/100km (jap import factory part time 4wd), and overall seems low on power (struggle on hills to keep up with 3.1 TD Jackaroos etc)

I've done the fuel/air filter, but no change, any ideas? I have noticed that I can pump the primer on the filter quite easily (no resistance) and can hear a faint hissing, but see no leaks, and primer goes hard after a dozen pumps or so, but then loses "pressure" as soon as you stop. Is this normal?

Any advice would be appreciated, as, at the moment, I'm thinking of getting another Patrol

Cheers,
Dave

check the clamps on the diesel lines are tight, and there are no splits in the hoses that could be letting air in. Also blow the lines back into both tanks and check the filters on the tank pickups. You can access them under the middle row seats and rear carpet.

If you didnt have the problem before you had the injectors done up there is a good chance your injector pump is stuffed too.
rebuilding your injectors normally increases the crack off pressure of the injector there for your pump (which is probably worn a bit if your injectors were) wont produce enough pressure at low rpm causing surging and loss of power.
