ok since i have a bit of spare time on my hands the vitara has had a couple of leaks.
1. looks to be coming from the bottom of the timing case cover. do they mormally leak from the front main seal or from the gasket that holds the front main seal. and to replace the front main housing gasket is it just unbolt it and replace the seal or is there a trick to it

2. also there is a leak from where the distributor bolts to the head. is there a gasket or oring there and if i remove the distributor from the head is there much chance that i will affect the timing if i just pull it off and then refit it.

On the front, the seal housing is actually the oil pump assembly, you shouldn't need to pull it off, just replace the crank seal.
But while you're at it replace the Cam seal, if it isn't leaking it soon will.

With the Distributor drive, Yep, there is an O'Ring on the shaft, but they tend to still leak after a while.
Wind the engine over until the timing mark is on 0 Degrees, that'll give you a reference if you muck up and you'll need it there to put the belt back on anyway
Mark the housing where it meets the block, Take note of where the Rotor button is pointing, mark that on the distributor housing.
Pop the distributor & angle drive housing out, clean the surfaces and put a little bit of sealant on it and pop it back in. Make sure the Rotor button is pointing to exactly the same place and the marks on the Angle drive housing line up again ;)
