Outer Limits 4x4 Board

ok so i have an 88 sahara hj61 12ht manual always serviced and driven not thrashed turbo always warmed and cooled before and after driving.

PROBLEM: i started it tonight and the idel is abit rough and there is a different noise coming out the exhaust glug glug glug sort of noise loud and deep.
it has a stright through exhaust 2 1/2 inch so it usally purs on idel like a D9 untill tonight.

there are no extra noises coming from engine its all through the exhaust ,still pulls boost ,not sure if it blowing anymore smoke than usual as its dark and raining.

would anyone know what this could be ??????????

on cold start its puffing out white smoke for a lilltle while ,when normally it puffs out black smoke only on start up

First things first. Do a compression test. Don't drive it until you are sure. A 12HT is too valuable to totally screw up.

You losing water?

oil and water are fine

1 stuffed/faulty injector..... or a valve riding... if you have boost more likely the valve (probably exhaust).

would that be an expensive job ?? if its the valves

Basically it means that 1 valve has gone out of adjustment and is not quite seating properly... this can give a noise similar to what you describe because some of what should be trapped in the cylinder is leaking out, via that valve, when it shouldn't. As B1 says, if you do a compression test, the one with the lowest compression may be a good place to start.... if you can't do it yourself any mechanical workshop should be able to do it for you. You might as well check all valve clearances while you're in there just in case some others are out as well.

With the car idling, hold a piece of paper against the exhaust outlet. If the piece of paper is blown away and sucked back in quickly, then it's a good chance it's a stuffed exhaust valve.

done that this morning ...the paper had pressure agints it untill it ripped
i took the tappet cover off turned the motor over and all valves seem to opening and closing .....when i put it back together i started the engine done the paper test and i gave the throttle a little tap and there was a knock does that mean its an injector no supplying fuel. the noise was like a petrol car pinging with the timing out

the paper trick probably wouldnt work with the exhaust going threw the turbo do a valve set easy place to start

ok so i have spoken to a few ppl that are either mechanics or mechanical background all have said valve (exhaust) .....have a diesel specialist coming tomorrow so i will know more then.

the latest is : had a mobile diesel mechanic come this morning he cracked the injectors 1 2 3 and 6 very rough idel ,4 5 nothing changed. he gave advise to engine flush and run castrol RX oil and change filter just incase it was a lifter.... done that no difference ,so i take it that it has done a valve or valves more $$$$

if no dif from cracking 4 and 5 i would be looking at blown head gasket between them or wores cracked head

what ever it is i dont have the money to fix so im going to let it go to a new home
