Another dumb arse petrol question?

When driving up hill on highway or accellerateing hard, it feels as if the engine isn't running right, ie slight miss, then an occasional knock, more pronounced the more revs I have on. This can develope into a full blown bang (backfire, but no marks/scorching around carby) that jolts the car. Any tips on where to start trouble shooting first. Timing, timing belt dissy advance?

Thonger, i had similar probs at one stage but fixd it by changing the power valve in the holley carb.

Not sure, but it would hesitate when you floored it then take off all of a sudden. I went to a performance place and they recommended that i set it back to factory jets and power valve and then start from there. I put a 65 p/vavle in and ended up with 59 jets and seems to have solved the problems. Runs on gas most of the time but i still wanted it to run properly on petrol.
