engine advice needed

Hi, just wanting to know how hard it is to fit a injected 3.5/3.9 to a classic rangie it currently has a 4.4 in it which has seen better days so is it worth the hassle of going injected or just throw the std 3.5 carbie into it. Thanks

I have fitted "Federal" injection to a 77 and IMHO it is not worth it.
I expected a great increase in fuel economy but really nothing much compared to well tuned Strombergs, and no real extra power.
However my engine was a High comp 81-85 and these had a very poor cam.
I would overhaul Strombergs now including new needles and main jets as these wear.
I remember on a club trip before I did the injection I had the best economy of any of the petrol RRCs and Discos.
The best thing i did for economy was to fit a Fairey Overdrive but it drove SWMBO mad changing 2 sets of gears.

sounds like the 3.5 is the go then all i need to do now is find one for the right money, anyone on here got one for sale?

i'd rebuilb or stick another 4.4 in, 3.5 is not really a power house. plus your already set up for the 4.4

yeah true i am happy with the power or more than it should have and where would i get parts from for the 4.4 everytime i need stuff for it i always struggle and the cost to rebuild it im expecting is going to be very costly

Look, I wasn't really commenting on whether a 3.5 is better, I was saying do not bother about the injection. 3.5s are more robust than 3.9 or 4.6 however.
A 4.6 will run well on carbs. The basic block is functionally identical.
And if you can get a 4.4 done economically, then that is also a good option.

There are a few rebuilt 4.4's on ebay, alternatively what parts are you chasing, we have 2 sitting in the shed since we've just changed to a 3.9 with ZF from 4.4 with torqueflight. Its been a complete pain to swap but thats more to do with the bloke who was supposedly doing it.

well its a 4.4 with a 4 spd manual thats breathing very heavy and has a few knocks and leaks so id like to if i can find the parts/afford it rebuilld it so the works. rings,bearings etc

My understanding is that the 81-85 high comp in Australia only had a unique cam with close lobe centres to meet emission regs .
These motors also had an air injection pump with 4 ports into the exhaust for afterburn and unique aircleaners with heating from the exhaust manifold .
I know mine didn't go anything like one I later drove with a non emission engine or in fact my 81 in Saudi with no emission stuff and low compression engine and a worn out cam.
