Hi Everyone,

I am new to this site and am in need of some advice. I am considering doing a V8 conversion to a 1990's Hilux. I dont know who to talk to, what the costs will be, even if it will be worth it. Just after some help of where to start.

Depending on how much you can/will do your self and which V8 you choose, anywhere from 5-6k to 15k+.
More common swaps are a Lexus 4.0 V8 or GM LS1 5.0.
What you want to do with it ?
What is your budget ?
What mods do you currently have ?

Hey Mr DJ,

I haven't even bought a hilux yet. just trying put sort out all the costs. the car will only be used for beach work and pulling a boat. nothing too serious. general use with a bit of a bark from the v8

Look at the Marks Adaptors website, they have pretty much everything needed to do the swaps, but not everything on there is needed.

You might get lucky, and find some bargains on ebay, boostcruising, they are some of the places Im getting stuff from.

Ive seen Holden injected 5lt V8s on ebay go from about 850-1500 complete with wiring, computer and other bolt ons.

Then you will need, engine mounts, custom extractors and custom exhaust, sort out what gearbox you will use, and get a bellhousing to suit, sort out radiator, engine fan or thermos, whether or not standard length driveshafts will work. Theres a fair bit involved.

Talk to an engineer about what you want to do, and he/she will point you in the right direction.

Also, use the search function, or have a look on the Toyota Surf Forum, they have a tech section on different engine conversions.

As far as adapters go, if you're going manual, you can get away with just buying the bell housing & Spigot from Dellow ,
engine mounts are fairly easy to fabricate, HZ 4 core radiator bolts pretty much straight in and wiring is fairly simple too
Use a 1 Tonner cover plate and a Dyna clutch plate

1uz with auto can be done for around 3 grand, no bull. woodbutcher on here did his. but you need to know wiring and thats using the auto. if you want manual add another 1000 to 1500, depending on what clutch you use. you use your existing box and transfer. half cuts are 2000 to 2500, engine and box aroung 1500. but may be missing things. scott at venom cobras can help you out with anything you need and does a really good wiring loom for them so you just plug things in. unless you can do almost all work yourself, expect to pay 5 or 6 grand for one of these depending on what parts you buy new etc. like radiator and so on

5 litre commodore engine is good if you dont mind technology the cave men designed with a bone, but they make power and are fuel efficient ish. cheap to buy and repair.

v6 commodore engine is common aswell, decent power upgrade also cheap.

why not just look around for one with engine conversion already done, it will be the cheapest option.
