forward shifting Tcase headache

Post by Ryan »

Hey all, i have a early model forward shifting Tcase that has had the same problem before/after a full rebuild (new bearings etc etc.. old ones came out in the oil) ill try to explain it the best i can.

When the shifter is to the right and forward (2wd) its driving the rear only, and in low range
When the shifter is to the right and all the way back (4Hi) its in high range rear drive (2wd normal)
when the shifter is to the left and back (4Lo) nothing at all happens, it clicks into the slot but theres no drive anywhere

now, with the shifter un bolted i have 2 linkages, looking down from the top and having them in the neutral position (side by side) if i slide both of them toward the front of the Tcase so they are engaged as far forward as they'll click. i get 4wd Hi

if i move the linkage on the rhs back toward the rear of the Tcase til it clicks in, i get 2wd Hi.

If i move the Lhs linkage towards the rear of the Tcase (one click down from neutral) and the Rhs linkage all the way forward i get Low4

so the range's are all there, but i cant find them with the stick bolted in, and i cant seem to figure out why, especially for low4 as the shifter cant push one linkage back and one forward?

hope that makes sense, cause its confusing me trying to get it working :? :? :?

Any help appreciated, i can get pics if need be but hopefully i described it well enough that someone can now say "yeah i've had that problem before.. its a simple 5minute fix"............ any takers??

Maybe the interlocking pin is not right?
The interlock should only allow one gear selection at a time.
Rhs rod in is 2H, Rhs rod out is 4H, lhs rod in is 4Low does this sound right.

kinda..
but for 4H both rods are out. as far forward as they will go. for 4L the Lhs rod is in and the Rhs rod is out, and for 2wd the lhs rod is out and the rhs rod is in...

sounds right from memory :?
Sure the problem was in the transfer case and not the gearbox?

sounds like a linkage problem can u pull the gearbow cover plate off and have a look to see where it may be wrong while moving the stick or even get someone to move the stick in the directions you want while u lay underneith and look to see what may ba wrong, another fix could be to do the twin stick conversion so that both linkages run to separate sticks, i think loctup sell these for the split type transfers

yea im thinking after having a play with the shifter off that twin sticks will fix it as it will allow me to get both forks all the way out for 4H, and one out and one all the way in for 2H and 4L etc... but.... superior have none, Locktup have none, and apparently they hard to get :? its a lose lose situation lol
