Will Engels work on 24v ?

As per the topic. I am thinking of putting the fridge into my work truck but after making room I realised that the ciggy socket is 24v. My phone charger and GPS seem to work OK but I'm a bit suss about the fridge. I know it says 12v on the plug but can it run happily on 24v?

Cheers,
VB

Sorry, should have said that before. It's a 32l fridge/freezer 12/240v number. Model MT35FP.

I just looked at the Engel website and it says it can run on 12, 24 and 240v, but the plug still says 12v only. Does this mean I may have to get a 24v lead?

I believe that you need a dovalacky to reduce voltage back down to 12v or you used to. ;)

try opening the plug that goes into the lichter socket... There should be a fuse in there, it should read either 12v ** A or 240v **A. I recommend replacing it with a 240v fuse or anything bigger if it is only 12 volts... Thats just a start, i had this query once myself and i kept going through fuses, if the model states that it can be used with 24v this should be all you need to do. If you're still a bit unsure you can by voltage reducers from many stores like supercheap and places like that.

Hope this will help... Good luck

Disregard.

Fuses have a current rating, not a voltage rating. Changing fuses for a "240 volt" fuse (in reality no such thing exists) is poor advice..

I would disregard that too .. but fuses most certainly have a voltage rating as the internal fuse link size and its capability to extinguish an arc changes with voltage :D

Is it possible that the fridges are self-switching, and the only difference between the 12V and 24V cables from Engel is the inline fuse?

Just wondering. Some, but seemingly not all, of the Engel fridges seem to be fine for both 12V and 24V.

My Waeco works on 12v and 24v uses the same cig lighter cable for both. It works it out itself which power i have plugged it into.

Sorry probably not much help.

Everything is converted to 12v inside the unit anyway and engels are self switching bar a few of the older models. Will work fine from a 24v supply with the same lighter lead.
