Just after some help guys. My 90 model 1.3l is heaps tempremental with idle quality. Its got clean filters, with twin fuel filters, the carb was cleaned out a few weeks ago, and the compression is good (180 -185psi across the cylinders). The plugs look a bit fueled up, and maybe a bit of oil, but im not sure if this is it, cause it will do it with new plugs too. Tappets are in spec, and timing (ign. and cam) are okay. Will idle good sometimes, then drop low and lumpy (like vacum leak, but checked thats not it). Tonight it wont idle at all, and stalls from anywhere under 1500rpm. Any help would be much apprectiated. Don't say see a mechanic though, cause i am one and its got me goin up the wall. I have searched (before the search nazi gets in :finger: ), and tried what other have suggested, but was just after anything else you think is worth a shot. Have got a carby kit lined up that i was going to put in tomorrwo, but would rather make sure thats the problem.
cheers

Broken or lose wire to the fuel cut out solenoid perhaps ??

Checked them , seemed alright, but have spare cutout solenoid, so might chuck that in see what happens. Anything else anyone, this is realy pissing me off. Oh, forgot to mention, its got backfire on compression braking too. i got extractors and exhaust, but it is more than the usual burble.
cheers,

sounds like a blocked air passage in the carby !!

if you have access to compressed air , give a short blast down the venturi,s , around all your ports !!
works for mine !!!
(but it hasnt done it for ages !!!!)

*quickly runs & touches wood !!* :D

Yeah got access to comp. air. Was thinkin that there was a blocked idle passage somewhere. Might do the kit anyway if i get a chance tomorrow, As i think that there is probably more garbage in there, as my secondary fuel filter (between pump and carb) has some gunk in it. Will see what happens i guess.
Layto....

Hope yours don't stop now :D

yeah i had the same problem put a kit thru it and it still did it , ended up it had a tiny bit of crap in the idle jet , pulled it apart blew it out with compressed air and carb cleaner , and runs like a charm haven't had any dramas since .

if its fine whilst accelerating id say its deafantly a partially blocked idle jet !

cheers jai

mine does it regularly, the idle jets are very small, they block up easily. even with twin filters, the shite can still get thru, and re coagualate in carb. I rev hard, block air inlet, and that usually fixes it (but compressed air is more civilized) . 99/100 times 1.3 carbs are the cause of poor idle and backfire. some ppl wack a different carb on, like a 1600 one. christover

im having the same troubles but mine also wont rev very high. I start to loose power / momentum if revs are pushed above 4000rpms. ive checked everything engine wise (timing, compression, cam belt, tapits, etc) but i still cant rev hard and power is lacking i cant even hold 100kmh on the highway.
Could a blocked cat convertor restrict revs and power???

yes , a blocked convertor can cause loss of power !!
also , how many dents in ya fuel tank ??? restricted fuel pick up ??

I had this same problem, the tensioner for the timing belt was worn causing the belt to skip a tooth.

Something to check

Get a second hand 1.6 carb, if your a mechanic you rmust know some good carb builders .. get one to rebuild it and then drop it on.

Check earths (one from rear of dizzy to firewall .. mine ran like a cement mixer without it)

have you checked your fuel filter ? what about your fuel transfer pump? i think my transfer pump is warn so if i sit on 90 km about 4500rpm for a while it starts to surge as the pump carn't keep the fuel up to the rate its being used, at around 80and less or for short bursts its fine . if i sit and idle for a bit or coast i can go 90km again for a couple of mins :D

Wont rev high stationary or under load, check ya vacum seconsaried on the carb, coud be not working. Hows the vacum advance working?? A blocked exhaust will cause poor performance for sure!! MY cat has blocked up before (neddle and seat balve went and poured raw fuel into engine , melting cat out) and the car wouldnt drive till i belted the cat with a hamer to free up the blocked bits. My carb is good now, pulled it apart and blew it out. Lookin for injection now (damn i hate carbys)
hope this helps

will rev high stationary (but sounds horrid) but really have to push it to rev when in gear even in first. Have replaced carb and it is better but still not perfect. tank is dented will only hold about 35 ltrs

My 1.3L 1985 carby was running great till I blew a gasket in the carby, then it would not idle. That was fixed, then it would not idle on choke, but would when warm, now fixed, now it has a flat spot at around 1900 rpm.

I'm beginning to hate my carby!
