When accelerating my landcruiser has developed a loud rubbing/zoidberg noise from the transmission.
it only happens taking off or accelerating under load.
can you help identify the problem with my 1997 landcruiser petrol
cheers, Mitch

zoidberg noise... like crying poor? That's usually the driver when they have to fill the beast up
but seriously could be the torque convertor.
You could start with a full fluid change (about 20 litres of atf) and the filter and make sure the throttle cable and manual linkage is right and any other thing i might have forgotten.
Otherwise it's transmission out for a closer looksy

its the wooop wooop wooop noise to be precise
The sound is like its rubbing/slipping and the distance between the wooop wooop gets closer together until i cant hear it.
This usally takes place in the space of a few seconds

Have you ever had the transmision serviced ?
No
Take it to transmision place to have it flushed as its the only way to do a complete fliud change.
Its recomended to change trans fliud every 20000 ks (i do mine every 10000)
Drop the fliud fill it up takes 6lts i do it at oil change time when the oil filter is due.

the fluid change intervals as specified by Mr. Toyota (it's in the manual) is every 40k. However the 'severe' schedule calls for 20k changes. If you tow or do alot of beach work, make it 20k.

I am Auto Trans guy a few things to try,
Generally servicing and changing the oil will not help usless the filter is blocked with friction material and the noise your hearing is pump whine due to lack of oil.
Have you looked around at the driveline to make sure nothing is bent or touching like the rear mounting is ok and transfer is not touching cross member, transfer shield it not bent up and touching transfer etc.
