td42 to turbo

Sure this has been done to death but here gose.

Have a 94 coil cab with a 96 motor in it believe the new motor had 186 ks on it when fitted 2 years ago regurely serviced.Now as Im going to use it to tow my comp car over to NSW for Tuff Truck told the wife its getting turboed before we go.Was told today by a guy who is normaly spot on that non factory turbo TD42 is no good to turbo and tow you will blow it up.I have never heard of this before in all the posts I have read ,only heard good things about turboing this engine.Was then told to ring a guy here in WA give him my engine number which he would be able to tell if it was I believe a newer motor that is ok to turbo.

So is this just crap or not also can anyone point me in the direction of a good set up so far only talked to one guy who only dose Safari set ups with a 3 inch system quoteing 30% increase in power .

From memory, the early N/A TD42's had "normal" pistons and rods, and then from 1994 (??) up to 1997 (??) the N/A TD42's were fitted with lighter internals to make the engine more driveable in N/A form. Less inertia resulting in a more responsive engine i suppose.

But yes, there was a change, however someone will have to confirm the years i've mentioned above.

the motors with the vac pump under the injecter pump are the ones with the lighter pistons 96 on i think have the i have a 98 which had the light pistons in it.

Dunc speak to Matt Craig at United Diesel, he knows basically all there is to know about the td42s and putting turbos on them...have a chat to him and you will have your answer.

what a crock of crap mate, it will be fine turboed, my 89 model 4.2d gq 430000kms and stil ran like the day it come out of the nissan factory, had a gt ball bearing turbo tuned to 12lb, these motors are great turboed. just dont go running stupid amounts of boost and it will be fine. there awesome donks, as for the bloke saying the motors with the vacuum pump under the injector pump, im not sure what he means by that, but if hes talking about the timing cogs well my 89 gq and 02 gu both in the exact same spot, so that doesnt sound right to me, best to talk to high performance diesel mechanic for peace of mind, as i was told all 4.2 internals are the same just the non turboed donks from factory ran little higher compression this is why its good to keep boost down a little, hope this helps

Not a total crock mate. But also not the whole truth.
All the TD42's seem to be extremely happy to be turbo'd. Even the supposedly less strong years have been turbo quite successfully. As coxy said there was a ran of motors with a lighter piston, think it had lighter rods to. Around 97 and up there all a turbo spec motor as far as piston and rods go. Atleast the same as the early GU TD42T.
There is also variance's in the oil squirters under the piston. Not even sure if the early GQ's had them.

On those motors with the light duty pistons. I would just be more cautious with the EGT. As long as you dont hold it flat and let the temps get high it should be fine.

Thanks guys from what I had heard through the years no one ever had a problem turboing a td42 will talk to the guys at United tomorrow need it done soon before we head across for Tuff Truck

i have a 98 coil cab and have spoke to nissan and a few other reliable sources ive rebuilt mine due to 6 cracked pistons, the pistons were the only difference besides the size of the crank nut. same rods same oil squirters just weeker pistons . seems all n/a models from bout 95/96 with the vac pump bunder the injector pump have the weeker pistons.

Talk to Sean from Swaftec industries. He does all the local diesels and has a very quick gq shorty with a diesel. Longetivity is more down to the timing and tune of the motor keep your temps like engine and egt at safe levels and no worries.

I have also heard that the ones with the vac pump under the injector pumps were the weaker ones. There the only ones that come through work with issues.

Went to nissan today gave them my engine number and all is good out of a 95 ute not mine with vac pump still behind the altinator rang a few places now just waiting to sell the falcon rtv ute then the turbo is a goer.

from what i have been told dont know the truth but the 95 engine was the best.. can anyone confirm this?

The trick to any good turbo job on a Diesel is to have a boost compensater fitted to you injection pump and have it calibrated on a diesel pump test bench. this will ensure you have the correct fueling throughout is rev range, no black smoke and no overheating issues. Any good diesel shop should be able to do this for you.

so im guessing out of all this if your pre 95 your donk will be fine to turbo

But theres heaps out there that dont have it, like the factory TD42T setup. Yes there is benefits but the world want end if you dont.

All TD42's if the motor is in relative good nick. Will take a turbo with good power no problems. If you want to make lots of extra power, then dosent matter which one you get, it isnt going to be happy with 200rwkw's in standard form.
