Elec fans

Which would you do?
1 big fan (13 inch) with a CFM of 1430 and the cowl. This would be pulling the air through the radiator.
Or 2 smaller fans (10 inch) with a CFM of 650 each and no cowl as the 2 smaller fans cover most of the radiator anyway. This would be pushing the air through the radiator.

I have heard that the AU twin thermos are about $400, and they come with the fan cowling, i have also been told first hand, that if you tell them your putting them on a taxi, the price will drop,
Mat bought them and told them they were for a taxi, and he paid $200, see what you can do,

Twin to cover more surface area, fused seperately, I've heard of melted down ones when a stick has jammed them, at least you'd have some cooling, I also had 2 thermostat's with a dash light letting me know when the hotter one is operating, a good "look at the guage" reminder.

You still need a cowl. It's not there to cover the radiator, it's there to ensure that the fans can ONLY get air that comes through the radiator. If you have no cowl, the fans will be pulling air from above, below, left, right, wherever because it's less work than pulling it through the radiator... so they won't cool anywhere near as well.
Same goes for pushing fans of course. Unless there's a shroud a lot of air will get deflected by the radiator instead of going through it.

What is the CFM of the Au twins? I was told to use a bommadore fan because of its higher CFM but that was compared to a D.Craig thermo.

I have a commo fan and radiator in my hilux with commo v6 motor. I took it for it's first offroad trip last weekend and it got pretty hot, so I don't think the commo fan is all that flash. It runs fine onroad, but heats up pretty quickly offroad.
From the few comments I've heard, I'm thinking of trying twin AU fans.
Does anyone know what the commo and AU fans are rated at?

Scott I was told to fit a lower temp thermostat when i get my 6 in. It might help you a bit.

im running a 16 inch davies craig does alright, but never get a thermo switch from repco. they are the worst switches. it wont kick in until 100 degrees. and thats on the lowest setting.
im going to fit a small fan on the front to run all the time, then when things get a bit hotter the 16 inch kicks in. and im going to get a proper davies craig thermo switch.

go the 13' because i think around 30% efficiency is lost when pushing air through radiator

almost all the custom radiator radiator shops use the au thermos. you set it up with an alfa (cant remember the part no) thermo switch. the switch screws into a bung that you put in, in the top tank. if it is properly shrouded, it will cool anything.
current car make hot weather testing is quite intense.
get a new commodore, drive it at over a 100 k's , on a 40 + degree day, in the northern territory, for a few hours, fully laden, to make sure you have plenty of heat soak thru the car. then, they have like a carport, 4 reflective walls, no roof, sort of like a solar powered oven, with no air movement. they drive the car into the carport, and leave it idling, with the a/c on, windows up, for about an hour.
if it overheats, they go back and try something else. if not, it passes hot weather testing.

13" = 1430 cfm ,......... 10" = 650 cfm ......
2x 10" fans only pull 1300 cfm of air !!!! and the cost of 2 versus 1 ????

You can get a Switch added into the radiator by most radiator shops.

Most FWD cars will have a thermo switch that's suitable to use. Most car accessory shop also stock a selection that can be screwed into the water jacket somewhere.
I got one from a wrecker off a Daihatsu Applause engine and have used that in my Feroza.

i wired a bypass switch to my transfer case when i put it in low range the
fan goes thought this was pretty cool then i just put it on a switch in the
cab but then when i converted a to a V8 the radiator guy told me to use a
radiator from a 60 series diesel and the fan from the engine and a shroud
and not to worry about thermal fans as they could do mre harm than
good i don;t understand why???
but my temp is fine
