1985 4runner rear breaks not working

iv taken apart the equalizer its all working but dose not make sence the way it works it pushes in but its like there is a spring missing to make it come back out and there is a oring that seems too big i think some one has played with it i can bleed the rear breaks so there is fluid going through but when i push the breaks it dose not work at all has any one had this problem or dose any one know where i can get a digram of how it goes together i have been searching for hours and cant find a thing any help appriciated.
