Gearbox oil level

Hi, I am trying to service my new rangie, it is 1977 4sd manual.
My manual says there is a dipstick for the main gearbox, I have taken the rubber boot off the topp and looked ever where and can not see anything like this or where one should be?
Anyone able explain another possibe way for me to check my level, as it leaks alot so I dont want to run her dry!!!
Same for the transer case.
Secondly, my passenger side floor has a lot of water on it when it rains, is this common and is there a possible 'easy' fix? as I am about to put new carpet in.

Don't quote me on this but to to check oil levels for remove the filler plug and stick ur finger in... if it's wet yr OK if not put some more oil in.... same with T/Case (or LT230 anyway)
With the leaky side have a loot where the door seals joins are... if they are at the bottom them then you have a leak somewhere else... If they are towards the top then BONGO..
I have moved my join to the top to stop water getting in when wheelin and it works but when it rains i get water running down the door seal and in the bottom... so I just live with it i would rather clean rain water getting in rather then smelly muddy water

I've never seen a dipstick on a 4spd before, on level ground undo the oil level plug (left side gearbox, just under pto cover transfer) and fill till it starts to dribble out the holes. I found the easiest way to fill the gearbox was to remove the gearstick and fill thru top.
The wet floor sounds like a windscreen seal or a leaking heater core, check the colour to see if its water or coolant.

....Some Rangies with the 4-speed (later ones...?) may not have the dipstick but all the early ones did, & so do the 101" 'boxes. Its in the rear l/h corner of the bolt-on top cover....it would'nt be hard to make one either.
Barnaby, you may find (or have found...) that the gearbox was OK or over-full, & the t-box was low........they suffer from the reverse of the Series L/R 'box habit of oil transfer... & loose it forwards.. I find its easier to run it off every so often & refill the T-box as changing the seal isn't exactly a before-breakfast job...

Yeah the dipstick turned out to be impractical [imagine that
] so it did not appear on the later 4 speeds only the very early versions.... Don't ask what date - I have no idea - I have seen one though!
