The facts are they broke the drive gears and the planetary gears .
I have broken 3 in 3 years and all where only about 10 months old .
I was running 35 at the time but so do a few other people i know
that have had no problems but in saying that they are running the 28 spline
maxi drives which i think may be a bit stronger .

thats a start to some good info. Where all 3 fitted to the same 3rd and axle housing? Did you speak to Mal about them? any thoughtson bad batch of gears? Who installed/set them up?

facts are stated above and i also now 2 others that have broken planetary gears ,and the guy who started the thread obviesly has a broken one too .

maxi-snaps are a good touring locker and thats it
i will any day go a ARB /detroit/jacmac before a maxi
ran a ARB in my truck with 35"s with great basin rover 4.14 diffs and did some of the most respected creek runs in it and only ever broke a crown wheel ARB still going strong i now believe my old truck is in coffs and drives there track weekly with out the ARB breaking but thats my opinion

yep...sure is

touring lockers hey....tell that to all the people that have competed with them and had success not only running them but on the podium also...

tell me what the magical difference is between the planetry gears in a MD and in an ARB????

plenty of people have had problems with ARB and they usaully get told that the installation was the problem...

so how many broken out of how many sold world wide?
have ARB ever broken or have they had a ZERO failure rate?
Did you approach MD or the supplier re the problem?

seems like there is a trend that follows the pirate USA logic of your not wheeling unless you break stuff but then you get to shit on the manufactures...

Since you seem to know all about this stuff Im sure you know of the teams that have had success with MD.....but im sure they dont drive as hard as you do

Differentials have planetary gears?? Cool. Nothing like hearing advice from people that don't even know how a differential is built. I'm pretty suspect as well. The R&P should go long before the diff unless you are pegged or are you guys talking Sals? If you are such serious wheelers, why are you not running a better R&P, (Toy 8", dana 60)?

I would say Serg a bad batch of gears as Mal did have them manufactured by someone down south .

Why would we want to upgrade the as you call it R&P Which I'm guessing seeing you no so much about diffs is what we call a crown wheel & pinion when we are already braking drive gears.

Ashcroft lockers seem to be the best value for money for rover diffs now. They are a new design with all the advantages and none of the disadvantages.

On the topic of MD lockers - I always thought the 24-spline versions used standard rover side gears and spider gears?

apparently not, as its the side gears which break and as these are no longer available it makes the centre an expensive paperweight. The side gears for the earlier 28 spline centres are however still available as are the axles from Hi Tough

Wow, ease up guys. I can't agree that maxi drives are touring lockers. I can undertsand the lack of confidence shown through certain failures that people have had.

But Serg does bring up a good point on the MD gear with regards to competition use. The out back challenge homed some MD podium finishes. Go overseas (malaysia) and ask the opinion there... they will tell you MD gear is the dux nutz (they also love the ARB gear).

As for ARB, well they break to, they also fail on a much more regular basis. But there is many more produced.

I guess at the end of the day, everything can be broke, people have opinions.
e.g. I dont agree that the toy hi pinion centre along with the CW&P is any stronger then my rover gear. That doesnt mean it isnt a good upgrade. I see it as a good upgrade for parts availability and better axles/cvs.

MD make some pretty orsum gear and I think it is a shame to see it tarnished on the net, but its life and we need to roll with it.
If anyone can find me some MD portals, I will give them a blowy! :D
