Anything is possible, I've not seen that conversion done and I have been involved with at some stage or another a lot of conversions. The 300zx Auto has a lot of similarites to the GU Auto so something should be acheivable their, otherwise you just get an adapter/aftermarket bellhousing. Why go for a small capacity high reving engine designed for lightweigh sports cars in a heavy vehicle? I'd be looking into a 4.8. I converted my 2.8 GQ to 4.8. You need a gearbox and have to move an engine chassis mount, x-member and some other things but I think it would be a better conversion, easier to register and more powerful.
Cheers
Joel

I was looking for a options with my rb30 engined patrol a while ago. I did read that a VG30 engine would bolt to a rb30 gearbox. If this is true I would be an easy option of gearbox. find someone that has wrecked a rb30 engined patrol get the gearbox, transfer case, cross member, levers and maybe the drive shafts too. Bolt this lot together should not take to much modification to bolt in.

Not sure on the VQ bolting pattern but the VG30DETT uses the same gearbox as the RB30S and RD28T/ETI.
I have a feeling you will need the front half of the VG30 gearbox and the rear of the RB30S gearbox.
The Z32 300ZX ran the same diff as the GQ and GU to. The R233 in the rear, however its in a IRS application.
