i'm planning a trip in the vic high country and have decided its time to install a snorkel..
It'll be 4" stainless steel, going on an 80 series (4.5ltr petrol)
just sorting out where i'm going to get parts for it from..
truckline have rubber bends, 45* for $33, 90* for $24
bit stuck on where to get stainless steel from, if anyone could tell me where i can get 2m from in melbourne (prefferable north east) that'd be great
any other tips for installing a snorkel would be appreciated
Cheers,
Julian

what stainless steel do you use for snorkels?
got a quote for 2m of 304 (1.6mm thick) for ~$70.. but read somewhere that 304 can rust

hey mate how u doing, i'm a sheetmetal fabricator looking to do a snorkel too but been abit caught up on where the get those rubber bends from sounds like u found them for a good price, i got access to every type of stainless steel tube/pipe that u can think off, 304 will only rust if it's exposed to alot of salt water, i'm going to be using 304 it'll be fine.
the only thing is i can only buy the tube in 6m lengths so send me a pm mate and we can possible help each other out??

yeh i just use the 304. the higher grade is for kitchen stuff which can't afford to have any corrosion on it at all

If you are a sheetie, why not buy mandrel bends and weld up a 1-piece stainless snorkel??? It will look better and flow better than the straight tube + rubber elbows option.

because i dnt like the look of a full stainless steel snorkel TBH and i know it will flow better but i highly doubt it'll affect preformance or economy or anything of the sort and doubt ull notice it.

I just used like a "C" channel rubber from clark rubber & just touch up around the hole & super glue it on..
Seems to work well

yeah just went to clark rubber and got some "C" trim like gq351 said, about $6 for a metre.
after i cut the hole with snips i tectaled the hell out of the raw edge and that stuck the rubber down nicely!
i live very close to the beach and my truck is down there far to often so i didnt want the hole rusting out on me to quick!
as for fixing it to the pillar, just weld a staino plate, pre drill 2-3-4? holes and use a some large stainless self tappers!, also i put a thin piece of rubber between that and the pillar!
hope that helps

I just made stainless saddles from flat sheet and fed the hose clamps through them. Strong as. I have also seen the hose clamps screwed on but I didnt consider them to be as strong.
In regards to the grade of stainless. I used to have 304 on my gq, which pitted from first trip up the beach (basically salt/sand blasted). I now have 316 on my gu and havent had an issue yet. I got mine given to me, but I understand its quite expensive!

Speak to the guys at Prochem Pipeline Products (03 9799 2244) in Dandenong. They sell 304 and 316 tube, the bends are only in 316!! aparently it is cheaper so they say. 316 has molly in it which reduces the likly hood of corrossion. It will still stain if left for a long period with out washing.
What every you do, do not weld or gring carbon steel near it because the particals will cause rust spots (stainless hates Carbon Steel). They even store it off the steel racks by placing plastic sheet or wood between the S/S pipe and frame to prevent carbon steel contamination.
Basicaly they know their Sh*t and will cut to metre lengths.
I like the rubber joins personly because it you side swipe a tree, you only have to replace maybe 1 piece as aposed to the whole thing.

mate, they might know their shit but they certainly dont cut to lengths, its 6m or piss off. well from my experience anyways.
i bought 2 bends from them last week 45 and 90
all up for just 2 bends cost me $91.63
prochem recommended sanovik and ASD Lynbrook because they "cut" to meter lengths for you or to quote him "if they dont cut to lengths, the certainly will point you in the right direction." NICE!

All stainless steel can rust.
Gr 316 is marine grade with a higher % of chromium so is less likely to rust.
If 304 is used and you make sure there are no scratches or pits in it then it will work well for a snorkel. The higher the polish you apply to stainless the less likely it is to corrode.

ended up using 316, the old man got it for me pretty cheap, and they threw in a 45* SS bend for me.
i was abit rushed to get it all done for my labour day weekend trip to the high country.
there are a few things that i want to change when i've got some time;
-replace top bend to rubber
-weld mounts to the snorkel (not happy with the hose clamps)
-elongate the hole on the body more
thanks for all the feedback/help/ideas
mount using hose clamp:
fitting to airbox:
done, without the bend:
top bend on:
