6.5 chev onto tb48 auto?

Hi,

My old man is thinking about buying a 4.8 auto Gu and putting a 6.5 chev in it. Had a look at the wiring diagrams and seen that the auto does have can wires running to it aswell. He wants to try and use the marks adapter kit and modify it.

Has anyone put a different motor infront of this auto? Will it be strong enough for the chev.

Any info would be great.

Thanks, lozz

The chev 6.5 diesel has 130kw & 420nm. (non turbo)
TB48 has 180kw & 400nm.
TD42T has 114kw & 330nm.

A GU TD42T with a turbo upgrade might be more cost effective, unless hes set on an auto. Could get an auto from a GQ TD42. Might be hard to find one.

hey thanks for the info.

spoke to marks adapters the other day and they are making a kit to for the 6 speed auto in the ve commodores to bolt to the patrol transfer case so he will go that way if it isn't to exy. my uncle imports motors and gearboxs from the us for the right price so he got the 6.5 at a good price and can buy the 6 speed auto for a good price aswell.

as for the power out put he might be running twin turbos on it with a bigger fuel pump and injectors.

A 4L80e is also another option as they are a good auto and came out in production behind 6.5s. marks make an adaptor from 4l80 to nissan transfer and then u would have to run a standard controller or a standalone aftermarket one. If set up properly would be a good swap, especially when towing

Hi there, i have just fitted a srt-10 dodge v-10 in my GQ 95 with auto box and have had no problems with the gearbox , it handles the load no problem.
Ehgine puts out 240 kw at the rear wheels with 525 ft/lbs torque. Just need to fix a overdrive lockup problem won't stay in on highway driving , rev sensor issue.
Cheers
Laurie

The auto gearbox on the 4.8 patrols is electronicaly controlled. The Engine Ecu, gearbox ecu, dash and ignition barrel are all linked. Will not work with one part missing unless you can find a good auto elect that by pass one section or another. The gearbox can be manalised and strengthened which does away with the electronics side of things. Try Kewish in Vic for this.
Would probally easyer to use a different gearbox adapted to the patrol transfer.
Personally i would not use a chevy 6.5 diesel, was helping a friend research swapping one of these into his Jeep Most of the info we found was negative of the chevy diesel option.
The Chevy Duramax seems to be a very good option if the budget will stretch that far. Have a look at HeathGU build threads.
Can I have the old tb48 engine ???

thanks heaps for the info.

laurie54 i would love to see pictures sounds like and awesome conversion.

it sounds like it could turn out quite exspensive trying to get the 6.5 to work with the 4.8 auto so he won't bother going down that road. he has just about finished doing a 6.5 conversion into a 02 3ltr manual patrol and decided that he wanted something newer with an auto.

i've been told that you need a very big budget for a duramax conversoin.

thanks, lozz

Sorry guys haven't noticed the thread had a few more replys. Yes the truck is a runner and goes like a raped ape, the torque curve is awesome at the moment it has 4.11 gears in the rear and it smokes the tyres with out trying. drop it out of OD and into second at 60 kph and it spins the rear wheels. i am running an Autronic SM4 ECU .
There is an article in the new zealand 4x4 Action mag, sorry for not showing photos here but i don't know how to post them.
Cheers
