TURBOing TD42

Post by SKITLEZ »

hi all been trawling throught the forums and most of everyone who has strapped a turbo to the old td42 has had no probs... but

the missus and i are plannig on taking the little shorty across the top end towing a trailer and would like to eliminate the chances of a nasty suprise. just bought a standard turbo and intercooler off gu with 60k worth of work on it. going to bolt it on.

can anyone suggest from experience what we might want to think about freshening up or changing to ensure reliability with the turbo before the big trip ie big end/small end bearings/pistons etc motor has just under 200k on it (its 24v jap import). i dont forsee any major probs because we only want to run between 7-9psi, does really well except its become a little thirsty since we put it on 33x12.5. (450kms on highway 70 litre tank) hence the turbo want slightly better fuel economy when we will be towing the trailer and a higher top speed than 80km/h going up hills, it gets fresh filters and oil regularly so is well looked after.

any suggestions or thoughts would be awesome

cheers

My LWB GQ had a small issue with economy after I fitted 33s(with factory ratios). So I fitted a rebuilt Hitachi from a GU, I had my truck tuned to run 12lbs and I also run a full 3" exhaust and the mpg is close to what it used to be depending on how I drive.

My advice is get the turbo rebuilt, wether it has shaft play or not.
Under 200k with 7-9psi will run forever. ;)
