Outer Limits 4x4 Board

hi all it's stupid question time again....

ive just rebuilt my 308 black motor, almost everything has been replaced, cam valves,lifters, crank has been machined ect ect,

i have just wound it over off the starter looking for oil pressure and i have none. i have primed the oil filter and pump,i have taken the pressure switch out (im running a mechanical autometer) and i have filled it up with oil through this hole. i pulled the pump off again as i packed grease in the gears and was prob too much, so i cleaned it out.

now i have just taken the rocker covers off and there is oil getting to the top, but i would have thought if i have any reasonable pressure it would be squirting out of the pressure switch fitting,

what can i check next, trying to avoid dropping the sump if possible,

I am not familiar with the 308 but in other engines I have always been told you should not use grease in the oil pump, just vaseline.

I tried this method recently and got no pressure from just cranking. It did have good pressure when started though.

Did you assemble the motor with assembly lube?

yea, i just found out not to use grease aswell, good old google im up the shop now to get some vas,

yea i used assembly grease, im not to worried about lub at the moment,as there is oil getting to the heads, so it's getting some lub, and im only crankig of the starter,

just looking at the pressure relief valve now, isn't there meant to be a piston of some sort in there? google to the rescue again,

keep those ideas coming

Just fire it mate. If it dont get pressure in 2 seconds shut it down.

How is the oil pump driven in these? I had a few hassles with oil pressure with a Rover V8 recently - this is an engine where the distributor drives the oil pump, I had an idea that a 308 was the same. I pulled the dizzy and drove the oil pump with an electric drill with a butchered screwdriver in it. As with Struth... got no oil pressure just from the starter motor but plenty while while running the engine or while spinning the pump with the drill.

It's gear driven off the front of the cam, pretty fool proof, if you can bolt the pump home it will be connected to the gears.

hey guys thanks for all the feed back, it realy helped.

good news is i have OIL PRESSURE!!!!!!! so all is good,i took the oil pump off again, and did the vaseline trick, made sure every thing was full of oil.
i guess i was a bit paranoid about how much turning over it took,but WD40 in the spark plugs holes was enough. this is has been my first major rebuild so all good, now to wiring it up and off we go,3yrs in the build!!
