1HDT Starter Help PLEASE

G'day all,

Just bought a 80 series with a 1hdt last last week, drove it for the 2nd time at the start of this week and it wouldnt start. I ended up jump starting it and it was all good.

Went out and bought a new battery today and turns out it still wouldnt start. Just has one 'click' in the starter and thats it.

After reading around I have pulled the starter motor off and had a look at the contact. They are pretty much brand new, I hit them with a wire brush just to be sure but still nothing.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be? Is there a relay or something anywhere it could be?

Really need to get it going asap as I'm stuck without a car.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Tommo.

solenoid or brushes are probably buggered. pull it apart and check how dirty it is inside. give everything a good scrub and see if that helps.

There isn't a relay, and this can sometimes be the reason it stops working. Could be a wiring problem, or a problem with the key barrel. (or something else along the way)

Try putting 12 volt straight onto the starter solenoid. If this works then you can either sort out the problem, or install a starter button which is what most would do.

did you check the contacts had been put in nice and flat. If they are cocked up one way a bit, this happens when the contact twists while doing up the nut, the plunger wont contact the other side .

Hey fellers,

Thanks a heap for the replies.

I just double checked the contacts are nice and flat.

Everything is pretty clean, I pulled the other side apart aswell (think it might be the bushes). All clean in there but dont have a clue what Im looking at in there.

As the starter is clicking, would that mean that all is ok in the key barrell?

From what I can see looking at the starter (I have worked with them before) is there is a little wire coming from the fire wall to the starter that I think is the actuator to get the starter going (when you turn the key). Then another bolt underneath which goes to the + on the battery.

Is there meant to be a earth anywhere?

disconnect the small one , bridge the positve on the starter to were the small wire came off and see if the starter works.
and no there isnt an earth wire, earth through the body of the starter

All sorted now, turned out to be a dodgy earth from battery to the block.

Thanks a heap for the help, greatly appreciated.
