although im confused about what gain i should get etc...can some one shed some light on what type i should look for and how will i know if its compatible with whatever unit i buy...im currently looking at a uniden because its within my price range

Basically all you need to know...

Depending on what terrain you drive in a 6db is in the middle so somewhat best of both worlds. 3db will give you a couple of hundred metres distance but it will be a spherical range shown in the picture, great for hilly terrain. The 6db flattens out a bit. Gives you some extra distance but isn't as spherical. The 9db is basically highway and outback road suited. Hardly any volume to the beam but can cover huge distances as it provides a very flat area.

Have a look here too

edit: In all honesty i would get this one.
