Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I bought a 1992 Navara this weekend. It's a 2.4 litre 2WD, dual fuel. Frankly it is gutless. This is not a big deal because its job is just runs to pick up reno materials etc, not hardcore performance or anything.

The motor in it was installed in 2009; it was a 2nd hand Jap motor with (it is claimed) 50k km or so on it, now up to 70k or so.

Just wondering if there are any obvious things I should check out before I rely on it too much. It runs on petrol but really badly, however the PO states it has not been driven on petrol for 18 months so almost anything could be going on there including shite fuel. I was thinking of just putting a tank of premium through to see if that clears it out a bit.

AFAIK these things are single-point fuel injection aren't they?

On gas it is pokier than it is on petrol but it still feels a bit weaker than I think it should; I thought the 2.4 while not a powerhouse would move it along a bit better. Any guesses on what might be up? Or are they all gutless?

Cool thing... it's a hydraulic tipper and the tray is quite large, trips to the tip will be a shitload more fun now. And it was pretty cheap.

possibly old fuel but also could be tuned more for gas.

might just be relative to what you're used to driving. I've occasionally driven the old 2.4 hiaces and they are pretty gutless in comparison to a new 2.7 or TD van

Your fuel problems might be dodgy fuel, but when the system doesn't get used they are known to rust up. anything from the pump to the injectors.

If you want to get it in optimum condition i'd start by checking the compression and valve clearances. then sort the gas/petrol systems.

which model motor does it have?

i had a quick look in my manual which has the later ones. some of the engines are still carby.

I think you may be right, it may be a carby model. To be honest I haven't had a look under the LPG bits to see. If it is carby then the weak running on petrol should be easier to fix I guess.

1992, 2.4 L is what I know.

I got it last night and gave it a good run today (on gas). Now that I've driven it a bit I think it is probably running how it's meant to on gas, it feels a bit gutless but it goes okay for what it is when it kicks down. There's definitely a petrol problem though.

2.4 carby is likely to be a Z24, they're a bit slow.

If its a Z motor it could also be anywhere between a 1.6 and 2.4 and you wouldn't know unless you found the number on the block...LOL

Hah, I am a dummy. I had a look now it's light again. It's clearly an injected motor as I can see four injectors in plain sight. The top cover says "Nissan 2400 12V"

So I think that makes it a KA motor?

I need a wiring diagram for this thing, does anyone know where I can find one? Some headlight troubleshooting is required.

I have seen this problem alot.
As for running on petrol.. When the fuel is left for long enough in the tank it starts to turn into jelly and seriously blocks the fuel pump sock if it has one, fuel filter etc...

As for gas, it wont be tuned properly.
Of the hundreds and hundreds of gas cars I have tuned over the years from 'Reputable' gas shops. Ive not met 1 gas fitter that has any idea on tuning by anything but the slow 5 gas analyzer for a good NoX and Co2 emission at idle and cruise.

Put them on the dyno and they are either far to rich or dangerously lean.

The venturi's they put into the intake system reduce air mass through the motor by up to 30% in some cases, this highly depends on the type of gas system and who fitted it.

The ignition requirements for gas is alot different to petrol and you cannot tune a car to run perfectly on both gas and ULP without switchable ignition maps.
Because it has a higher octane rating than petrol it actually needs more time to burn in the cylinder, you can achieve this by advancing the dizzy but it will likely knock when running on petrol (unless its 98ron)

My advice is get it run on a dyno and post up an Air Fuel Ratio graph for petrol and gas.

Thanks guys. To be honest the dyno would probably cost a bit more than I think it is worth spending on the car. Petrol's emergency fuel anyway, so... it'll do. One day when I am keen I might look at the petrol fuel system closely but for now the ute has to get to work moving pieces of my house around!

The engine is a KA24E.

There 96kw from the factory. 3 Valve arrangement.

Look to the US for mods.
