Hi all,

Just in the starting processes of making my trailer and am wondering what the process is for getting a new trailer complianced, registered etc

how do i get a vin number and a stamp stating its rgtm?

i am aware i need brakes on all four wheels, and break away breaks etc as i will need it registered as 2500kg.

you need to weigh it and take it to your local Blue slip guy from the best of my knowledge.

If you stop in and talk to you Blue Slip guy he will tell you exactly what is needed. but I am fairly sure its fairly easy to do.

Go to QLD transport to get VIN, they sell you a VIN plate that you have to get engraved before you take it to get rego'd. Then you have to get it weighed at a public weigh bridge, cost about $15 when I did mine, I think the weidh bridge cert is only valid for 24 hrs.Shouldn't need a safety cert because it is a new trailer. Take it to transport and they measure it and rego it.

If you are regoing at 2.5t you might aswell go for 3.5t, it wont really cost much more.

Lots of different info floating around but if you want - get it straight from the horse mouth.

For instance the old bloke over the back bought himself a caravan a while back and upgraded the axle, brakes and wheels.

Took it in and regod it and a few weeks later got a letter from them saying he had modded it and needed to see an engineer for a plate.

Engineer did the right thing and explained to him that it would cost him 700 just for him to look at it whereas if he handed the plates in and then registered it later as a home built no compliance plate needed.
