Engine management light.

I have done a bit of a search and cant find what i am looking for, The engine light has started to come on in my nj 3.0. the car is still running great, im wanting to know if there is a way of retrieving the diag code manually without a plug in..I have done this before on other cars and cant seem to find if it is possible with the paj. And help or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
