I have a L28 MQ shortie and am wondering whether anyone has used or would recommend using unleaded fuel in these engines??

I run Super when I first bought the MQ (Sept 2003).
Then I went to unleaded and upper cylinder lubricant additive (lead replacement/valve seat protection stuff). It started to ping, and a timing adjustment fixed that. Then it started pinging a bit regardless of timing, and I've gone to PULP pretty much exclusively, without additive. Seems to be happy enough on that (for a noisy, tired, grumpy old engine).

Here's the evidence I used to convince myself ULP or even PULP was okay:

Use PULP. ULP is too low octane for them but LRP is FAR FAR worse you'll foul your plugs in no time.

All L series nissans since 1973 were designed to be able to run on ULP (it was introduced in Japan about then). Most japanese engines (with the exclusion of a couple of australia only engines like later Toyo 18Rs or Pajero 2.6's when they'd been long ditched by japan) are in a similar boat.

I ran my L24 and L26 Zed engines on LPG with no modifications and I can guarantee they were tuned to twice the horsepower you're running but suffered no ill effects.

:D

If you're really fussed about it run some upper cylinder lubricant in your fuel, or another lead substitute fuel additive - most petrol stations sell at least ione brand or buy it in bulk at supercheap or Kmart..

When i had me L28 MQ i ran it on ULP all the time, all i had was some upper cylinder lube, that was ran on a dripp system that fed nto the manifold, ran no dramas, no pinging, and all that stuff......

they run unleaded. LRP was never a fuel for this motor.
If running it on LRP successfully ur timing is out and u r paying too much fuel. Get your timing corrected and u will ping. So go back to unleaded the way it was ment to me.
