OK I know that the newer 85+ hilux front diffs are the preferable ones because they have extra gusseting. But how important is it?

A guy is selling a 83 single cab localy for $500 and Im thinking if I use the front diff and the transfer (for duals) and sell off the rest I could end up in front.

How hard is it to weld bracing onto the diff without bending/warping it?
I will be shaving its bottom too!
Paul.

Would you have room on the top of the diff? I was looking at a small gusset front diff last night, I'd say that you'd be pretty good mates with your grinder by the time your finished cutting it off. ;)

it will be fine, and as long as you take it slow with out a great deal of heat you shouldn't warp the housing

Its only about $200 to straighten a housing anyway.

I just cut the bottom gusset of mine and put it on top then cut a peice of 82ID pipe in half to put at the bottom and also shaved the housing aswell, heaps more clearance and a ruff measurement and it didn`t move a bit.
