80 series noisy gearbox

Post by crankycruiser »

Well Im on my way to the cape, currently in melbs and the g box in my 80 has decided to start making a whirring noise as soon as u shift into 3rd,4th or 5th. only makes the noise when u are on the gas (even lightly accelerating)..

any ideas what this may be, I did change the oil b4 i left home and it came out as clean as the oil i put in, I put castrol VXM-M? in it.

pretty sure its not the t case as it only does it in the top 3 gears as i said...

cheers fellas

Hey cranky, I just did a full rebuild of my 80 as you know. I had the same noise. It actually turned out to be the rear bearings.

I could have sworn it was coming from the gearbox.

No, I had a full gearbox and transfer rebuild done. Is was the rear WHEEL bearings. A wurring under throttle. Even light throttle.

I would. $35 each side for a kit. Turned out the drivers side was the culprit. If you want to check your input and output bearings. Jump under it and get someone to rev it a few times very slowly through the rev range. You will hear it chuttering. But thats usually caused by low oil and burnt bearings.

just checked and tightened rear wheel bearings, they were a bit loose, but its still the same. I pretty confident its coming from the box. I have put the t case in neutral and it doesnt seem to make much noise, but i havent got anyone to lay under it yet. damn cars!

I would have replaced the rear bearings. Is your gearbox the H151f and Hf2a tranfer (gxl) or (pov pack) with the H150f and Hf1a transfer?

Oh ok then. Everyone swears by the H151f. All the gearbox shops have told me nothing really goes wrong with them. New bearings, syncros and seals and they are ready to go. Same with the transfer. Did you change the transfer oil aswell? Maybe just try an additive.

possibly shot bearings in the box, or i had similar noises in my cruiser, although it was 1,2,3 and 5 but 4 was good. it turned out to be a cluster shaft in the box. the noise couldnt be heard if u had the transfer in nuetral and went through the gears, & couldnt be heard if u coasted with the clutch in. i had to jack the back wheels up off the ground and then leave it running in gear to get under it to pin point where the noise was cuming from.
Does the whurring go up and down with engine speed or wheel speed????

funny enough i got an exchange reco box wen mine packed it in... eventualy lost 1st gear, figured it was easier and quicker then having mine rebuilt. was sposed to have all new bearings, sincro's seals, new main shaft, modified 1st gear washers and new selector folks, i instaled it and straight away the whuring was back.... emptied the oil in the box and it was black with silver specks. the rebuilt box was a dud from the get go

VMX-M did nothing good for my gearbox, I put it in after a lot of people on various forums recommended it to help with difficult shifting. The gearbox started making some funky noises and it did not help at all with shifting. I took it to a transmission place and they told me it's too thin for those gearboxes. They replaced it with the recommended oil and an additive and it's been good since then.

Maybe try and replace the oil with the Toyota recommended one and see how that goes.

Funny you say that as I was recommended to put vmx80 in mine and the lay shaft has started whining. Might try going back to standard

Bloke iknow ran half AT fluid and normal gear oil which he was happy with. I use valvoline gear oil with additive. The additive made a big different with noise and shifting in low gears when cold.

Just to follow up on this.. turns out it was the rear pinion bearing was loose..... not bad for a brand new diff that would be lucky to have done 1500k :bad-words:
