80 series: Gearbox, T/case and diff lube recommendations

Hey all

Am looking at dumping all of the driveline fluids before I go away on a trip in a few weeks time - and was wondering what other 80 owners use and recommend. Vehicle is a '97 40th Ann manual, with no changes to the diffs

From what I can gather from various sections/posts of the Lcool group:
Gearbox - Castrol VMX-M 75W85
Diffs - LSX 90W130 (in both, despite the front not being an LSD)
T/case - VMX-M 75W85

Castrol site offers CASTROL EPX 80W/90 for front diff, and Multitrax for t/case (altho VMX is offered as suitable replacement for t/case)

I'd prefer to not have multiple types of oils which would need to be carried as spares: has anyone had any experience with the above listed products? Only having to carry VMX-M & LSX 90 would be more practical only IF they did the job of the recommended lubes

Appreciate anyones feedback on this issue - and also any recommendations on what to avoid

Cheers and thanks in advance
Norbert

I use Penrite in mine. Manual gear oil light SAE80w/85 Transfer case as well. Limslip gear oil 85w/140 in both diffs.

Gday
Use the VMX in the box for sure, and LSD oil in all the rest, or VXM in the transfer if so desired, but the 85/130 would be better in there than the 70/85

What if your running Air lockers or detroit/lockrite "unlockers"
You've no longer got the LSD clutches therefore do you require LSD oil?

They are all different lol (diff/erent) the locrite uses the lsd clutches, the detroit doesnt, ARB lockers specify normal oil, but lsd oil has friction modifiers in it that assist the orings to not wear as fast....best to use the LSD oil in my opinion lol (o/pinion)
So you can have one oil, i would recommend LSD as it can be used in all that normal gear oil is in, but not visa versa.

Great, so what your saying is that we don’t need to differentiate between the two as the difference is Limited for a Slipper Differential.

Well as long as you have no shifting dramas in your box - ie going back into second or up into third - then I have no alternative.

If you are starting tio get the issue - then here's teh recipe to save you $2000!!! at you gearbox rebuilder...

5L of Mobil 1 syntheitic 50W motor oil, and 1 L of Moreys.

Obviously you inly fit 3.3L of oil but make sure you emty 1L of moreys first and top off with the Mobil1...

Then its easy shiftying a go-go.
