3F timming gear problem, common? easy?

I have bought an 80 series with a timing gear issue. Motor is a 3F-E about 200,000 old turns over with no noise or resistance. Is there a common problem with the timing gears failing in these motors? Is it likely it is stuffed and should just look at replacing the motor? I have not removed the rocked cover yet but winding the motor over and putting a finger through the oil filler cap confirms over head rocker gear is not moving. Any help pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Darren

From memory the cam gear is plastic, turn the crank and watch the rockers, if they dont move properly take the front cover off and have a look.

Got a feeling reading somewhere 3F-E's were non interference so it could be ok.
