Fj45 no spark - no start

OK I give up what's wrong with it ?
I have a 1984 FJ45 2f motor
Recently did some engine work, new rings, big end, gaskets, reseated valves, reco carby
Drove it home from Brothers shed no problems.
Sits for a few moths while I do some body work, motor starts running rough and back firing?
So I put new plugs in it...no good
new point....no good
new coil, new leads, new cap, new resistor....no good
while I was at this point trying to work out WTF is going on, I put my timing light on the other leads and found 2 3 and 4
where not consistent the light was stopping and starting? at the same time I could hear the motor pick up and fade off again
So I replaced the distributor, brand new out of the box, complete unit....yep no good ##@#%^
So I start looking for a wiring problem and its at this point I lose spark all together ??
run a wire from coil direct to distributor its started (just) then stalled and have no spark at all now??.
I tested voltage at the points and its there at the points ??
the only difference I can see between the old distributor and the new one is what looks tome like a earth wire
screwed to the body where the little resistor is, seems to make no difference if I earth it or not.
I hope someone can help because I came close to cutting a hole in the fuel tan and throwing a match at it
