Outer Limits 4x4 Board

hey guys just wondering what your opinions are on the pajero iO as a STARTER 4X4...

been lookin at a few and the 2002 model 2.0l 4 cylinder manual looks like it may be a winner...
i was lookin at some specs and thay say that the power to weight ratio is slightly higher than the regular TD pajero of the same year, although it does have a turbo so im mot sure the iO will pick up the same acceleration.
what do you guys think of them...

as far as mods go all i would like to do is a suspension lift because the current ground clearance is only 205mm whereas the regular paj is 225mm
and maybe a body lift if its not too hard...
and some decent 4x4 tires and wheels...

Waste of time, parts are all different and rare-ish in australia

BTW a shogun is the uk name for a pajero

if you want a 4wd, don't get an iO. wifeys aunty has one and it a POS. Gutless auto and very small interior. Great if you want a little run around car and have a v a g i n a

$900 in parts for the lift, and then there's the issue of fitment if you can't do it yourself. Lift for a paj is a set of stock gq coils which you can get for a 6pack, shocks out of a 4runner or hilux depending on which Gen paj you get and cranking the torsion bars

Twin air bags? Got a gf? If so there's twin air bags right there hahaha

Gen2's are getting down in price, and 150,000 is pushing it realistically even for an io I believe. You will get the io, be bitterly disappointed and still have to pay it off

the one im lookin at is a 2002 model in a manual and im not worried too much about the power in it. im not gonna be doing anything over the top.
and i figure that if i want more power later on i can get a regular pajero or put a turbo in the iO. its the same engine as the 04 lancer - 4G94 SOHC 16v so engine mods are easy to find.
anyway ive seen videos of what they can and cant do and most of the stuff they can do is what i will probly plan on doing? i dont need it to be able to do everything...

hahaha yeah i do have a missus.....

nah its coz i have 2 younger sisters aswell which i have to cart around quite often...
in that respect the fuel econemy of the iO will be good...

one question....
apart from being cheaper, what advantage does the sierra have over the paj iO if all i want to do to it is a suspension lift and bigger tires?

It will only really pay off if the 4wding bug bites, and you want to tackle harder tracks. The Sierra comes with solid axles front and rear, so it can provide better wheel travel, and aftermarket options are basically unlimited for them.

However, on road, the Paj iO wins hands down.

the 4wd bug will bite at some stage im sure. but it wont be very often. probly once every 3-4 months or so...
its not so much the tracks i want to tackle atm anyway. i just want something that if i go camping (which i do regularly to fairly easy to get to spots in my outlander) that i can get there a little easier still and have confidence that im not gonna wreck anything. i also travel along country roads fairly often, mostly gravel and dirt.
what i plan to do is take out a 3-5 year loan and then after that get a bigger 4x4 for touring when i have the money for getaways. im still at uni atm so i dont have much money for holidays anyway atm...

Sounds to me you should hold on to your outlander for a few more years until you can get what you actually want and by then you will have some idea of the direction you want to go in...

problem is i dont actually own it. its dads old work car and when my sister gets her license in september we will be havng to share a car. and i need a car available 24/7 as i am a cfa volunteer. i just got home from a fire actually...
so all i really need is something to get me there and back again with the same capability as the outlander, and imo the iO is more capable than the outlander...

Do a search on the POCUK (pajero owners club uk) forum for GDi motors, they are probably one of the most hated motors for some reason, i dont read the threads because a) i dont have a gdi motor, and b) i dont wanna hear about whiny poms

I don't believe we received the GDi motors here in Australia - something to do with our stone-age petrol.
