looked at gq today, tell me what you think

hey, im looking to buy a patrol to go around australia in. so i went and checked one out today .

its an 88 model with 350000 ks on it, 4.2 diesel with a safari turbo on it. its got a 4 inch susp lift and 35 "tyres on which arent in that great condition. its got gu diffs and brakes and gear ratios are from a 2.8 so the gearing is correct for 35s. its got a roof rack and a bullbar. its got a dual bat setup and arb air lockers front and back. the guy says he wont take less than 16500 for it with a rwc. What do you guys think? sounds pretty steep to me but i spose its got a lot of gear with it. the bodies pretty rough but im not too fussed about that. its drives allright, how am i supposed to tell what sort of condition the motors in? it sounded a bit rattly but im not sure if it was more rattly than any other diesel with that many ks on it.

only things its missing are a intercooler and a winch and id say id have to put new tyres on before my big trip.

thanks guys,

yea mate your right about it being abit steep! But i think they do rattle a little the gu 4.2td of a mates sounds exactly the same as my mates 1988 model with 400000km at idle in the morning. But yea $16500 bit steep.

Quick maths 6k for tidy non turbo 1994 gq td42 (seen cheaper), 3k lockers fitted with compressor ect, gu 4.6 diffs complete 2k, turbo kit 2k, lift if done right 1k if not $200, arb bull bar $1200, and a roof cage $800. =$16000. and thats brand new for everything except of corse the car, not second hand dnt know how old or flogged it is.

Id be thinking around the 12k mark form what you have described. Or if you have the time and know how get a GQ grampa has used to go to the shops every week nd biuld it yourself.

I have been seeing alot of it lately, where people are asking for what they have spent on the car + wat its worth, and you just cant get it I work on about what the car is worth + 50% of what all the bolt ons would be worth new. ( I surf the net way too much looking at performace cars and 4x4s, i am stuck in a mine camp way too much).

Futher more, if you wana around Aus a gq with 4 inch 35s and 4.6s is not somthing id be looking at.
*4 inch lift = more fuel cost + illegal (in QLD at least). And if not done right unstable and exsesive wear on components.
*35s = high wear , more fuel usage , harder to get if you destroy them, again illegal.
*4.6s= reving too high on hwy use yes even on 35s, Unable to go back to 33s if you want/need.

16k it would have to be a pretty tidy GQ these days, a bit of patience and looking you can get a GU in good nick with the same gear for that money now.
Keep your eyes open on car sales and the forum and be ready to go out and look at one as soon as you see it advertised.
My opinion is you may find better but without a pic and seeing it we are only guessing.
Thats only my opinion .

thanks for the responses. i think ill keep on looking. id rather buy one with a bit of gear with it just because itd end up cheaper than building it myself. your right though this ones probably a bit too extreme for the trip. i think ill keep a look out for something a bit more mild, on 33s with 4.1 diffs and a winch maybe. probably dont really need lockers anyway.

thanks

Quick maths 6k for tidy non turbo 1994 gq td42 (seen cheaper) ....doubt it, not in recent times. more like $7-10 for a good one
3k lockers fitted with compressor ect, .................................$3800
gu 4.6 diffs complete 2k
turbo kit 2k................................................................$3000 min for a good professional job with out cooler
lift if done right 1k if not $200..........................................more like $1500 - $2500 unless you get some decent second hand gear
arb bull bar $1200
and a roof cage $800
$16000.
So more like
$8000
$3800
$2000
$3000
$1500
$1200
$800
$20300

and i know the rig he is talking about and it actualy has alot more gear on it. i was considering buying it myself but am getting a ute

This is just a broad reply and not pointed at this vehicle but remember that when choosing a vehicle because it has a cetain number of accessories check out the condition of those parts, it does not acheive much if you have all the after market parts on the vehicle and they are old and worn out.
Sometimes and only sometimes it pays to get an unmodified truck and add the parts yourself but other times you will get a great deal where someone has put all new and unworn gear on a truck and is selling it at a bargain price.
Little bit of research pays off.
I sold my GU a year or 2 ago with approx 12K of extras less than a year old and it was sold for approx 12k that was a bargain but i did not want to stuff around i just did not want it anymore as i was after a 120 series Prado for R&D purposes and for my partner to drive.

like i said, a good one.
Basing figures in the hope of getting free stuff?
Turbo kit uninstalled?
Suspension as i said $1500 and up depending on what you want so your figures and not far off.

i based my numbers or realistic figures, obviously you can go get cheaper elsewhere, but not everyone can so you need to be realistic. Not everyone want to install their own turbo or suspension. obviously if you do this, then yes you will save money.

Book a flight get a bank check for less then the price i was thinking about so i can bargin with it if need be and head off ive brought it every time but if you dont like it u use the cash u took fligh home and can the check. And with outers as big as it is you could prob even find sum1 to check it out for you what ever area its in. Hell you find 1 in mackay ill check it for ya.

when we were looking at gq's in sydney we never even saw a single diesel at the prices your talking big lux, more like 4 - 6 even for a petrol model and rough to boot.

Maybe 4wd's are so cheap in qld as they have been skull dragged everywhere on their 31's and stocker suspension :finger:

as for lockers fitted for $300 each - certainly not drive in drive out. and yes 4.6 is the correct ratio for 35's :finger: for stock gearing :D

I would not expect to find a good diesel with much change from a tenner.

16.500 is top dollar but if the car was in good nick and maintained perfectly then id consider it, but it sounds like its pretty well used and 35's and lockers isn't for a trundle up a country lane. plus if the 35's are on the way out your looking at big $$$ to replace and get spares. another $2k plus.

touring i would go 33's and maybe a rear locker but the nissan lsd is good anyway.

As for finding gu's with those mods for similar money - maybe once in a blue moon but when i was looking any gu's around 15k were rough, non turbo and had 400- 600, 000 km on them.

I would rather get a late model gq in good nic at the upper end of what their worth (say 10 - 12) than a gu thats 3/4 farked at a seemingly amazing price...

Personally i would keep looking, but yes the td42's do rattle around a bit - but if it doesn't sound right get it checked - two reasons you don't want to find out it has a cracked head in the middle of the simpson so get the pre trip check done at the same time you get the pre purchase done and kill two birds with one stone.

two gq's for sale on here at the moment $16500 and $18000. maybe 16500 for the other one isn't so far off the mark? soon gq's will overtake gu's

http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/res ... 0608%20937" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

this is the selection on carsales in vic at the moment for 4.2 manual diesels. the one with 260k on it seems good but its seems way too dear for basically standard and it doesnt even come with a rwc.

what do you think about the other one though? id rather one with a bit less lift for reasons mentioned above, but i could just lower it to get it back to normal a bit more. and all thatd need doing is the diff gears to suit 33s, and probably a turbo. pity its done so many ks...

onb another note, what are the main differences between gq 1s and 2s? standard gqs diff gears are 4.1? sso you need 4.3 for 33s, am i correct?

thanks guys
