how many k's on the engine there would be people out there who will probaby correct but haveny heard much of these engines doing valve seals. do a compression check it could be as simple as a blown head gasket.

I would suggest injectors need servicing?

mine does it only on cold days. I tried glowing it around 3 times and its sweet!

My injectors are due for service but just havent got round to it!

Had a 60 series years ago that did this was the valves on top of the injector pump that maintain presure between the pump and the injectors they were leakinging back.So in the morning there wasnt enough presure on start up in the injector lines to crack the injectors thus running rough untill the pump re presureised the lines

I would start by doing a compression check while its cold. Then another when hot Thomo.
By what you say though, only doing it when its cold could be a couple of things.

The oil could leak down the valve stem when the car is sitting, Pooling behind the valve or running into the cylinder.
This will cause combustion problems until its burnt off.

Second, as the pistons etc.. come up to temp, they expand. So it could also be a oil ring problem.

The comp test will determine which direction you take with the rest of the diagnosis.

Mine does the same. My mechanic who is a 4BY specialist told me that the GU's do run a bit lean on cold mornings. This is the cause of the miss especially if you increase the idle speed by the hand throttle. It's pretty good if just at idle speed. You will notice it stops after about 30 seconds or so depending on how cold it is. Nothing to worry about.

The problem is a lean or rich mixture wont cause blue smoke.
Nor will it cause a miss when cold. If it is lean, the idle will be lower, if it is rich the idle will be higher.

On a petrol however, a lean mixture can cause a miss due to unsatisfactory mixtures that dont want to ignite when sparked.

I checked mine again yesterday and the only time it blew a puff of blue smoke was when a cylinder missed. Otherwise no blue smoke was present at all.

i had a hilux with a rebuilt 2.4 diesel, with the tubo of a 3.0l gu on it, running 18 psi. i had the blue smoke problem!!! not bad just enough to pick it threw the black smoke.
the way it all worked out with the custom turbo setup was that my oil return didnt drop down immediately. so overnight oil would seep back into the turbo, threw the seals, but first time it came on boost it cleaned up and was perfect.
i figured skrew it the tubo is well oiled.
