Gday all,
I drive a 2003 Hzj79 series with about 240,000km on the clock. I have a couple of questions.
First- My ute starts fine cold. Glow it till the light dissapears and the normally 1 revolution sees he going. When hot but its a totally different ballgame taking 10-15 cranks before kicking over and dumping a big puff of diesel smoke. Any ideas on what this could be? May relate to next question?
Second- There is a strange whistling noise when driving. Pretty high pitched. Any Ideas?
The car has been looked after since I bought it (165,000km) but unsure previous to that. it seems to have ok power and is pretty good on fuel (get just under 1200km per fill on 285/75r16 muddies)
Only other thing is I have removed EGR and rebuilt injectors, but was doing this before then.
Thanks
Mic

intake or exhaust for the whistle. If it varies with your right foot probably exhaust. If it's all the time or more consistant with rpm: intake
the hard starting is usually the injector pump.
The pump wears internally and ends up having trouble building fuel pressure as diesel thins out when hot.
Causes are poor diesel quality or loading up or a hot running engine when the fuel level is low. That's because the recirculating diesel cools the pump. So less fuel in the tank less heat transfer is possible.

What oldmate said is true.
The main cause of pump problems from earlier year model vehicles is weather or not the pump used on your car had seals designed for low sulfur diesel or not.

Cheers!
I'll send the pump off for a rebuild. Probably could use one after 240,000km.
Anyone know who makes a good set of extractors for these engines?

Pacemaker do good extractors for the 1hz. I'd also get your valce shims checked too mate - makes a difference!

Save your money.
Of the hundreds I have run over the last 10 years, ive seen a whopping 3-5kw gain out of any exhaust and sensible tune setup out there.
Of course there is plenty of guys who will claim 15-20kw, but the vehicle will blow more fat than a tractor puller compeition.
Keep on saving until you have enough for a turbo for the 50-60% gain in power and torque.

x2. Plus by the time you pay for the extractors and a decent exhaust to the back you could have done a home brew turbo setup which will give you the standard 30 percent or so increase in torque still using the stock exhaust.

Have been thinking turbo, but am unsure. Many users get great results and many claim it pops their engine. If I was going turbo I'd swap in a 1HD-FT or FTE instead.
I have also been reading about adding 2 stroke oil to the fuel which I just did about 100km ago. I have noticed the whistle seems to have died off heaps! I'm running a 200:1 mix. I'll keep posting to let you guys know how it goes.
Cheers for all your advice
