need help mk :D

Post by Animal0x »

Hey guys/girls i just need a little bit of help pleasee...

I use to own a mk patrol SWB 4spd. and it blew up :( i had big big things installed for it. but it died so i sold of the shell lol..

ANyway it use to run around 20-22L per 100k's which is fine.

My friend had one the exact same a few years earlier thow. Ran around the same petrol.

He has recently just put a red 308 into it. I think it has a upgraded cam and holly.

hes selling it to me for dirt cheap. Since he owes me alot of money haha.

Anyway he said it gets him 200k's to a tank. Now thats like 30L per 100k. Thats pretty stupid lol. He rekons it needs a good tune, as it is old etc. and it was taken out of an old mk. of his mates which wasnt even driven for like 2yrs lol.

ANyway. i just need to no. Is this fuel reading accurate? or will it get better? I really cant see how a 308 runs 30L per 100ks haha.
its on 35/s to if that changes anything??

2nd question... Size of the fuel change fuel usage? haha lol.

3rd question how much is a LPG kit these days? And then how much to pay a mechanic to install.

Thanks heaps guys. Cant wait to get some answers back :)

Ta John.

you might see a couple of litres/hundred improvement with a tune, but i wouldnt be holding out for much, especially with the 35s.

put it back on standard splitties, or 31s and you will see a massive improvement. Maybe even down to the 22 you used to get.

Maybe.

Holly and Cam is bad news for economy.

They arent really a complex carby the old Holly's and are normally tuned on the rich side for engine stability.

I would be sticking either a standard or tow cam in it that are designed more for low/mid range power with more so economy in mind.

As for carby well... what do you do? You cant ever get a carb to run the perfect fuel ratio at all conditions, so what they do is run them overly rich so you have a nice smooth engine.

Look into maybe a batch or even single/two point injection setup with a cheap efi computer and get rid of the carby all together.
Or
As you say, straight gas. Most kits around $4-5K still.

99% of the problem right there......

LOOSE THE HOLLEY

Why would holden or any manafacturer for that matter, spend thousands of dollars on research and developement to come up with a carby that works for that specific engine when they could just bulk buy holley's for a fraction of the price
:?
Oh I remember now..... cause they are JUNK
You'll get better ecconomy if you use a jam tin with a nail hole in it and dribble the fuel in....

other options:
get a 5spd box

loose the red 308 and fit an injected motor from a VS series holden, much better ecconomy from an injected motor and the VS series are reasonably priced at the moment

LPG..... There's plenty of 2nd hand systems out there that will easily suit the 308 red motor..... hell there's probably 3 or 4 setups in my loft at the moment.
You can do some of the instal yourself but you WILL need a licenced specialist to sign off on it.
A new setup wont be cheap.... 3-4 grand... 2nd hand would be under $500

In all honesty... a alloytech V6 would cream the old 308 in both power and ecconomy

fuel savings alone would pay for a far better engine in a very short time
;)

mmm yeah thanks for the info.

I just find it weird. like. the v8 in my patrol. fucking moves. lol its quick. like as quick as a vs v6 commodore. (a stock one).

But my patrol is on 35's and weighs more haha.

But u say the v6 has more power??

Plus the v6's r alike 160kw and this red v8 r like 114 or something? So its crazy how the v8 goes harder??

Also. Should i be on 35's or 33's??

its on 5inch's of lift too.

so what to dooo??? lol

this largely to do with the gearing of the two vehicles..... ;)

Your playing with old engines, the new breed of injected V6's and indeed V8's are far better in their power / torque & ecconomy developements than any old red motor could ever hope for
& as you posted....
"v6's r alike 160kw and this red v8 r like 114"
Just imaging how much 'quicker' your old MK would go with an extra 46KW's under the bonnet
:finger:

Entirely your choice.....
STD tire for the MK is the 750/16 ....
when measured its actually 33" so you've only increased the size by 2inches....

Companys like eldenbrock do a vally fed injection that sits on top like a carby might be worth a look.Jamie who navis for me has one on a 350 in his gq and finds it exellent. But I aggree whith the other guys you can just get better tecnolagy too cheaply to bother with shuch a old motor.Especially when you take into account ignition and the upgrade isn`t going to get you a huge power increase. If the motor was in the car maby but I wouldn`t put it in.

noooo lol. it already is in the car!!! lol.

Thats what im asking willba.

Should i just give it a tune. and keep it. Or should i fork out like 2k and throw in a newer v6 or v8...
also. How much power do the stock l28's have? I think that was in it. After the v8's gone in it. Its probs got like 4x the power of the l28 lol..

Thats why i find it very weird that its only 114kw lol.

Also note. this is not a daily driver. i actually have a company car for a daily driver. i will only be driving this on weeknds. when i go 4x4ing or camping. PLus i can get a 120L long range fuel tank. So fuel wont bother me that much....

But what would u guys do?

Sell it? Buy another engine. Put it in.
Or keep it? Give it a tune...

And some of my mates have apparently said u will need new gearing for the 35's? Or diff ratios or something? Or r they talking smack...

Thanks guys :D

114 KW
Is not 4 times more than an L28
Theres no way a carb fed 308 pulls 4 times as hard as an L28
I wouldnt expect to get any better than 25L/100Ks from a carb fed 308 /4 speed MK (4 speed MK , strange ???) on 35s
The L28s even in factor spec were bloody shockin on fuel
IF ya want an economical MQ/MK , should go the diesel route
As for better economy ??
Ditch the "Bucket with 4 holes " holley
Get a rochester , with the small primaries
Ditch the 35s, back to 31s
Youll see an improvement
But it will never have commodore economy, never
As mentioned a good V6 will lunch a carb 308 most days

As for changing the diff gearing
Whats in there now ???

sorry its a 5spd.

And it did have the l28 in it. And now the red308 is in it. u can smoke up all 4 tyres.

Thats why i find it strange? According to the internet the stock 308's r 114kw lol. I dnt no how but this thing feels like its got the power of my xr6turbo (200kw rw)

I dnt really care for fuel economey as much as a i care for climbing over shit. Its not my every day car either. just for when i go 4x4 and camping.

Dnt no what gear ratio is in it now? Its stock thow.

Its torque that spins tyres , not HP
114 Kw as mentioned would be on a stock motor
So wack extractors, bigger carb, bigger cam some head work, bigger pistons , blah blah blah
Any of the above will improve on the factory power output
A new XR6T will give an LS1 commodore a good run
Matter of fact they are the fastest factory 1/4 mile car mass produced in australia ATM
13 sec quarters
An XR6T will eat an injected 5 litre commo for breaky
So either theres more to the story or this carbed 308 has have some serious work done to it

Mate had a carb HZ stato that was doin 13 sec quarters ,we were looking at puttin that in a patrol ute
But , he couldnt afford to run it daily in the stato , so in the 4x4 it would be worse
