Squeaky clutch, annoying problem!

Hi all,

For a while now my clutch has been making a horrible squeaky sound when I press it in. I had a look and tried some grease on it but doesn't seem stop it. I grabbed hold of the cable while I pushed the pedal down and from the feel of it, it felt like it was comming from inside the cable. Does anyone know how to fix this or do I need to buy a new cable?
Do I take the cable off and put something down it???
From what I read on the net ages ago it sounds like a common problem...

Thanks,

Hi tehekho,

Thanks for the advice. I will have a look to see where is bearing is. I could not see any bearing up near were the clutch cable/pedel is.
The sound seems to be coming from near the firewall where the cable goes through.

Wait, is the sound there like, when the clutch pedal is pressed down, and keeps going while the pedal is pressed down? Or is it only while you're moving the pedal to pressed down to not pressed down?

No the sound is not there when I hold the clutch in, I don't believe it is the throw out bearing.

The squeak is when I press the pedal in and it squeaks when I let it out. I just check some other forums and it seems to be a common problem. There are a few suggestions but no definite answer to the problem. When I bought the car the person whom I bought it from mentioned something about her mechanic putting some grease on some part with the clutch cable/pedal. It didn't squeak when I bought it but a few years later it started and won't stop!
I had a look at the online manual and it mentions that with inspections you pull the pedal out and make sure there is grease on the bushes next to the pedal lever itself. Now I don't know if that is the problem as I "coated" the area with grease. But i didn't pull the pedal assembly apart and do it that way.
The next step is to remove the cable and pedal and inspect it, but I need time to do that, which I don't have :(.
If anyone has had this problem and has had to deal with it, I would be much appreciated if you could tell us what the problem might be.

Thanks,

As far as I can remember, at the top of the cluch pedal, there is a spring (little over or above the spot where the cable ties to the peddal) that brings back the peddal to its original possition.
Put some amount of grase to that.
I think that will solve your problem.

Thanks Mitsos,
I will check it out on the weekend. I have rubbed some grease up and around that area but it didn't stop the horrid noise :(.
I may need to have a closer inspection.

I had a poke around yesterday and I believe its the clutch cable rubbing on the rubber ferrel in the firewall. I'm just gonna harden up and deal with it

Hi all,

I have tracked the problem and fixed it.
I gather this is probably what is wrong with all of them. It is actually easy to fix.

There are several places that will cause a squeaking sound. You can deal with all of them in one hit. Here's what I found.

First you HAVE to remove the clutch pedal itself, this is quite easy. Two 12mm spanners will do.
After you take the bolt out you have to remove the clutch cable from the top of the clutch pedal. Here is one problem.
When you remove the pedal there is a harden bush/cylinder in the pivot shaft with a plastic wear/guide sleeve at each end, they must be there. I noticed that the harden bush/cylinder had slight wear on it but it wasn't enough to make a new one. There is also a spring around the left side of the pedal.
Apon inspection I I noticed several "dry" spots or wear spots, wear the pedal was rubbing. These are spots that are the problem.

1. The place where the cable connects to the pedal is "hooked" on. The end of the cable has a harden bush moulded into it. If this area is dry (void of grease) then it will make a horrible sound. You need to grease this spot and you have to remove the pedal to do it.

2. The harden bush/cylinder also cops a bit of wear, this needs to be grease well as I noticed wear on the ends.

3. The spring on the left (around the shaft, which is the return spring) of the pedal also rubs on the side of the mount with is apart of the vehical. This needs to be grease as well.

4. The cable joint. Where the cable connects I noticed wear on the sides as well. This is a cable rubbing on the SIDE of the pedal. This would produce squeaks as well.

5. To inspect, clean and grease the clutch cable end, I found it easy by just pulling it through the firewall.

I just greased all the spots.

That's about it. The hole process took about 1/2 hour to an hour. I reassemble everything after cleaning and greasing. It works like a charm. It was even easier the press down. In actual fact it was so easy I hit the firewall with the pedal and made a nice thund noise :).

The grease I used is a molybdenum type grease (black color). I guess you could also use never seize.

Hope this helps!
