Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Im in the process of restoring a caravan and i need to clean surface rust off the chassis. Im looking for options other then angle grinder and a flap disk, so if you have ideas let me know please.

i'm in the same boat.

rust converter in a spray gun. I got some on tuesday and it seemed ok but then paint didn't like sticking which means alot of work afterwards anyway.

i'm considering for the chassis just spraying the whole lot with fish oil except the outside rails which ill wire brush on a grinder then paint black.

If it is just fine surface rust, you can use a product like De-oxidine, (phosphoric acid) or use a rust converter such as Galmet. you need to clean flaking or loose rust off first. Dont spray everything, it will cause adhesion problems later, just apply it to the rust with a brush.

prime with a compatible primer ie Galmet rust converter = Galmet Primer.


If you are going to fish oil, do your rust converter and paint first, fish oil will cause you problems with painting etc

For various bits that I've been restoring on my project I've just used a thick wirebrush wheel on a grinder, failing that take it to a soda blaster to have done?? Then its just hose off an prime.

A lot of people use POR15 which can supposedly be painted directly onto rust. I've never used it myself so cant comment on how good or bad it is.

I was thinking down the line of blasting but cant tow it far as it is unregistered. Started doing a search for mobile sandblasting, might look into other forms of mobile blasting.

I just did my heavily yuck rusty sierra chassis mainly using a wire wheel and a flapdisk. Came up great. Will be using a killrust base paint for under and topcoat though.
Took a while, But rather i do it then pay 300+ just for blasting..

I would like to do that but I don't have the joy of having the chassis sitting on a bench. I have to do it laying on my back under the van and there is some C channel sections which makes it harder to clean. I don't mind spending a few hundred to get the job done quickly and then I can brush on some rust converter, then spray on some cold gal. Will look at some rubber based paint protection later before it hits the road.

if its not a large area you can buy spot blasters quite cheap just make sure you use proper grit and not everyday sand as you can get sylicouses from breathing in the fine sand particles. ive done a torana using a slightly larger version though by the time i was finished with the whole car i had given up on the project

Personally I would prime it under the kill rust, I haven't ever found kill rust to be very good at stopping rust. might just be me but for example I took a set of trailer guards back to metal with a wire wheel, then wax and grease remover then kill rust - 2 years on with no use just exposure they are all rusty again.

for a chassis I would hate to need to do it again.

Kill Rust is just a paint brand name. Don't be fooled in thinking it's gunna stop rust.

I just bought a KBS sample kit with the aqua wash, rust blast and the paint. Im going to give it a go. I may even try the vacume sand blaster then use the KBS paint.

Slightly off topic but thanks for the heads up on the KBS stuff. I'm using white knight red oxide primer on some suspension parts but hadn't found any suitable top coat, have just ordered 1L of their BlackTop chassis paint to try out. From what I gather it will be far better than the Motospray subframe paint I tried before...

X2 on the Phosphoric Acid, I worked for Jason La-Z-Boy years ago, the metal components were bathed in Phosphoric Acid prior to being painted.

Hey Stuee how did the KBS paint go?
Would you recommend it.

I havent used the gel above , but used the liquid ( http://www.bilthamber.com/pro-introduct ... ame=deox-C" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) to clean out my engine block water jacket before rebuild. worked really well and with little effort. The gel is so it can stay in place on angles etc

then some cleaners, paints etc

Phosphoric Acid, do you spray on then hose off or leave it on and paint over it?

From memory, they would allow the parts to completely dry then dip them, I never really went to close to to watch the guy that did it as he stunk worse than a skunk.
