TD42 injector pump timing
Hi, looking for some help on setting injector pump timing on TD42! I know it needs to be .74mm BTDC and I have dial indicator but what else is required and what's the best way to do it?

Gudday, these were the instructions given to me a while back when i built my engine.....
1. Place the engine on TDC by aligning the pointer with the mark on the front pulley.
2. Remove the 12mm hex plug from the back of the fuel pump.
3. Install the dial gauge and fitting and preload the gauge by approximately 2mm.
4. Rotate the engine counter-clockwise until the dial gauge stops moving, (the gauge will also be travelling backwards) (it may be necessary to hold your finger on the end of the gauge to check that it has travelled all the way back)
5. When the gauge has stopped moving, this is the pumps Bottom Dead Centre position. Zero the dial gauge scale at this point.
6. Rotate the engine clockwise until the pointer aligns with the timing mark you have made and read the dimension from the dial gauge. It should read 0.74mm.
7. If the gauge does not read your spec, rotate the pump in either direction to achieve the spec you are looking for.
how much advance are you going to give the injection? it makes a huge difference to power and egts.

Thanks for the information. I don't know how much advance the engine should be running, I assume I start with a factory setting maybe. This is all pretty new to me hey! I have just rebuilt my TD42 with some extra attention given to some internal engine work. The engine has a Cam fitted with a slight grind, Injector pump has had some mods done also and injectors were reco'd at same time as pump was done. (Cracked pressures increased on them) All that was mentioned about pump setup was .74mm setting. I'm pretty sure the pump advance wasn't mentioned.

Yo pump builder should have gave you the dial in specs for the pump he built you every pumps different. Exspecially after theyve been modded.

I guess you can play around with it at a later date to see what works for you.
When I first did a tune for max power we set it up with as much as 6' advance which was great for EGT's and the huge PWR ali radiator looked after the heat no probs but ended up doing a head gasket after 12 months from (i suspect) the high combustion pressures so backed it off to 3' and have been running it at that for a long time now.
I looked at better head bolts ie studs but it got put in the too hard basket.
I'd like to know if anyone else has run that much advance and whether it is sustainable in a daily drive - as the performance is alot better with the engine definitely having more "crack" when you get into the power.

Hi, I'm trying to remember what he said and only thing that keeps coming up is .74mm dial measurement. I think factory is .64 or something but once the pump is modded that goes out the window . My last pump was dialed in at .55 . Best way is on a dyno so you can listen as they can get fairly noisy, an get pwr an heat out puts.

Yep the .74mm I have came from The pump and injector builder so it'll be right. As for the advance I got the call today about where it needs to be so it's all good now!!!
As for the engine; it's finished being built so just got to fit the bolt on's to it,fit the engine and wait for the Intercooler setup.

As for the engine; it's finished being built so just got to fit the bolt on's to it,fit the engine and wait for the Intercooler setup.

hi Dave, the 0.74mm is the amount of travel of the plunger/cam in the IP, this can be set up at TDC when installing the pump but for better performance advancing the timing is used (more timing gives that nice diesel 'clatter' at Idle).moddedgu wrote:Whoops sorry thought you were talking about advance! The later the timing the later the burn and higher the EGTs as the unburned fuel passes through, the more advanced the timing the more complete the burn (more power) but engine may run hotter. Thats the simple way it was explained to me, i'm sure there's more to it as tuners are pretty smart cookies and i'm all ears.
