ins and outs of Hiluxes

New to Toyotas and i am eyeing off a dual cab hilux as my next fourby purchase. I want something to set up well for beach fishing runs. I am mainly interested in live axles and leaf springs because i like to keep things simple. Can anyone point me to info on the different series of hilux's as there seems to be dozens of different model numbers. And can anyone let me know when SR5 models went to IFS. I have been looking at late 90's models but get the feeling the SR5's went IFS sooner than this. Also what is an SAS conversion.
cheers

I have a 96' model dual cab, I believe it is the last of the live axles.
If you're planning on alot of beach work, avoid carpet like the plague. You'll never be rid of the sand or the smell.
I'm pretty certain SR5s come with carpet and all the bells and whistles.

And pretty sure SR5's all come with IFS as well, well all that I have seen anyway.

If it's only beach driving I wouldn't rule out ifs. Doing so limits your engine choice too. Go IFS and you can have a turbo diesel or v6 petrol. The IFS in the older hiluxes are a simple torsion bar setup, no more complicated than a live axle/leaf spring setup. They also have a bit more clearance under the front which helps with the worn in beach tracks, although the rear end can still drag.
