when they slip, they are normally stuffed.
Bands are pretty strong, its normally the torque converter over drive/lock up that gives up the ghost.
which gear is slipping?
Full rebuild was going to be too expensive (wouldn't expect any change out of $4000+), and we also found that a good manual conversion was going to cost us about $1500 (fitted ourselves).
Reasons to why we didn't go back to the auto, were that all the second hand units;
i) Had higher kilometers on them,
ii) There was no way of testing to see if the unit was a dud,
iii) The shear cost of the rebuild.
iv) We could not find a second hand unit in Tasmania, they would of had to of come from the mainland.
If you do go for a manual, the factory ring and pinion ratio will be 3.9, and we also found, that the SWB GQ, coupled with a manual gearbox and 33's is a quick car, and had far more power than with the auto.
I love automatics, and it was very good in patrol, however IMO, the manual is just a more robust unit for 4wding, it isn't as sensitive if you get some water into it.
