Patrol inner bearing race

I'm doing the bearings on the Gu.

outer bearing race knocked out easily... Inner bearing race jesus, I though I was going to knock the head off the 3 pound hammer???

Tried heat etc and no love.

I took it to the local mechanic to have it pressed out and he laughed and said their press wouldnt get a patrol race out and I needed to go to 1 of 2 places in the area with a press big enough to push it out...

Are they all really that hard to press out?

I've never seen one so fuggin tight before. Why would they want such a heavy interference fit?

I've never had a problem getting them out with a suitable hammer and punch, maybe take it to another place. I ground down an old race and use it to press the new races in when I reassemble them.

Same here or I just use a pin punch and hit it on alternate sides..soon comes out.

That makes more sence, as i couldn't see any point in being so tight. This was well stuck in. Bfh wouldn't even get it to move. I didn't even get 1mm lol.

Quick question if anyone has the info on their mind. The outer grease/dust seal goes which way? Sprung side in or spring side out.

From memory it's in but can't remember off the top of my head. And whilst I pull everything off and rest it down in order to avoid this issue... I can't even find the one i pulled out

Are you talking about the grease/dust seal on the inner wheel bearing?
Must be....double rubber lip towards diff centre if that makes sense.

That seal is in place. But in the kit there is another seal, about the size of the outer bearing race od. Stuffed if I can picture where it goes in my mind. I remember something about two seals but now can't even find this one in my junk pile...

Can't even see the point of a seal between the hub lock and the bearings when I think about it as it's all grease based.

If I can't figure it out in the morning in better light I will pull the other hub off to reverse engineer it so to speak.

But would rather not have too of course.

Just had a look with the torch and Looks like it slides into the spacer that fits in after the smaller outer bearing race... Can anyone confirm that.

Can you identify the part in this diagram? Thought I knew what you were on about until you mentioned spacer lol.

I've decided its an extra seal thats come with the kit - perhaps to suit another vehicle that the kit also fits.

I went over the hub from top to toe in the day light this morning and can't find a surface that the lips would seal against...

here is the bits i had left when confused.

here is the seal...

The hub is all back together sans seal...

Any ideas or is it surplus?

Dunno mate, if you put things back how they were using new parts and you have something left over then it must be surplus to requirements.

Where's your spacer ring for the dx hubs in the pics?

That looks like the seal that goes on the back of the stub axle. part number 40232 in the picture above! it does get used! just not many people bother to replace the needle bearing in the rear of the stub axle!

Matt.

Yes, dust seal for the back of the spindle (stub axle).
