hey guys

I have 2 x LN106 Hilux's with 2.8 diesels in them ans they both appear to be leaking oil around the oil filter housing,

Is this a common problem?

Could it be leaking from the alen key grub screw that goes in there? (I was told that buy a mate)

Any help would be much appreciated. also how hard is it to fix? I hope, just unbolt it and replace the gasket, Is there any sensitive/fiddley bits behind there that can fall apart on me?

thanks James

I had the same problem in my 2.8 4runner.

I replaced the pressure relief valves and also had a new gasket put on the whole oil cooler filter assembly (steel one with grey sealant) but it still leaked so maybe there was a crack in the plate somewhere. Most likely the threads where the relief valves screwed into. The pro that did the job said when he first started he cracked a few by doing the valve plugs up too tight. The relief valves sit on long springs so if you undo their plugs, there will be a bit of spring tension that may send things flying if you're not ready for it.

It never leaked a heap, just left a drop on the end of the plug after a long run and a weep stain on the block so I never took it back to get it fixed again. Sold the car a year or two after.

I think you can just remove the whole plate (lots of bolts holding it on and from memory there's one right under the oil filter - I didn't get the pleasure of doing this so don't know if there were bolts of different lengths to go in certain holes). Coolant also runs thru this to cool the oil so you will prob have to drain the coolant first.
