I have fitted new nitro gears to my 80 (C&P). There seems to be too much slop in the drive shaft. I took it back and was told that after market gears arent as good or true as genuine gears. And also old axles have slop in them aswell. Is that all true????

Slop? Backlash? If there is too much backlash, they have been setup incorrectly or bearing preload isn't there. I built some Nitro geared diffs and they setup spot on, but cant comment on the noise as I havent run them yet.

nitro's are a bit cheaper but I cant find any warranty info, longfields will be the go. will the longfields fit ok in a full time 80 changed to part time with avm HP hubs, what brand gears are you using?

The AVM hubs will be the weakest link.

Yep, in 1 spot there is hardly any backlash. Roll the car forward so the drive shaft rotates 180. There is twice as much.

I've setup a couple of diffs running nitro R&P's. I reckon they are a good bit of gear. ZUK from gearinstalls.com seems to rate em to and u can't argue with that. I've got a set of 5.29's ready for my next 60. Can't comment on their axles though.
Backlash should be set at 0.2mm (8 thou) on new gears too.

Read alot of zuks gear installs, good info.
Best to pay a bit more for quality and ease of set up and go the nitro gears, thanks.
Bigboy the 80's can get worn cv splines and drive flanges aswell.

Its in the rear diff. New gearbox, transfer, drive shaft. Only thing old is the axles.

Missed that bit, forget the cv's then.

Maybe there isn't enough carrier bearing preload or run out in the carrier itself?

word on the street is that yukon gears are the go, even better if you get them cryo'd by bobby long. and when it comes to something like a cv, why skimp, buy the best and you dont have to stress
